exposed steering column

rested my foot on my clutch the other day (mk1 p1 rt) waiting for a mate to get in the car, noticed i could slide my foot right up the pedal arm and touch the steering column, can feel it rotate when i turn the wheel (obviously). was wondering if there's a shroud or something similar missing or are they all exposed on those models? got grease all over my shoe too.

Pretty much the same in every car i've ever been in tbh. Pretty sure theres no shroud or anything.
