FAO anyone using newsgroups and being throttled by isp...

  Audi S3 225
Hi, just to let you know ive finally got around my isp (Pipex) from traffic shaping and throttling my conection, after trying out almost every available newshoster, i went back to giganews to try out their new ssl encryption service and by using port 563 i finally get full speed again, only connected at 1.7mb at the moment and its constantly downloading at 179.9kbs. I did try the original 563 port for ssl but looks like pipex got to that one first.

btw its pretty expensive compared to other newshosters, i signed up to the Diamond Single User Account + SSL unlimited, its $30 a month but so worth it! on a 3 day trail but i might as well activate the full account now, as im probably gonna go over the 1gig limit withen the next hour or so.

I'm only shaped from 4pm till 12 (Plusnet) i can live with that, I'm with newsdemon (unlimited/£11.99) which is cheapness.

i work for an isp and get free newsgroup access at full speed anyway, so i max out my 4.5mb connection pretty much 24/7 :D

I was with newsdemon, had to cancel as they dont do ssl, also had to cancel newshosting which i forgot i was still paying for! I was being shaped 24/7, i could only download from newsgroups between say 1am till about 7am, after that it was so slow then about lunchtime to 10pm it wouldnt even download at all, just refused to connect on every port!

I have just bought newsbin pro as well, got the discount from giganews, qaulity bit of software. was getting fed up of the pirated buggy version that is available.

canna wack the pipex, im connected at 5.9 meg and can download at a whopping 20k/sec all night via torrent, i love it!

you signed up, you should have read the terms and conditions and done your research first.

you get what you pay for. buy from a "cheap" provider who use the 'pile it high, sell it cheap' mentality, and you get stung.

bt central's don't come cheap, and any isp who sells at bargain prices can't afford more centrals for it's customers, so they have to manage the traffic other ways.

i usually do with everything i do/buy, just slipped up this time thinking pipex was still one of the best isp's (it used to be believe it or not) im paying for it now tho, ill defo learn from it and as i said above it will be the 1 month min contract providers from next year on..

the way things are goin and the outcry pipex has caused they will be down the tubes shortly hopefully

pipex aren't going anywhere.

the company i work for is owned by them, although we don't use thr same tactics as they do as we are more aimed at businesses and more tech savvie home users, plus we charge a lot more per month than pipex do, but our contracts are monthly.

^Hope they dont.. When pipex 1st took over F2S they said that it would remain standalone. Now their offices are in the same building, traffic shaping was introduced and the connections from F2S all route though Pipex servers.

you are mistaken.

pipex do not work out of the same building as f2s.

f2s used to be in the same building as me. now they are in another building on the same industrial estate which i will be moving to shortly. pipex don't work out of our location. pipex are up in manchester and in welwyn as far as i am aware.

3rd line are partially shared between f2s, nildram, and pipex and they are based in oxford.
