Femtocell - Whats everyones views?

Read in the paper today about this Femtocell thing. It basically said that you connected it up to your PC and when you dial a number with your mobile it kind of intercepts the call and diverts it down your broadband line so that you get it for free?

I then searched online but everything geeky and not really in plain English lol! Is that the basic idea of it? Surely there would be a monthly subscription or something? It seems a bit too "easy", you buy this thing for approx £100 and never pay for calls when you are at home again?

THe femtocell, basicallty acts like a miniature mobile phone mast. It was originally designed to be fitted to aircraft, and then route the calls over a sat phone to the networks, in order to reduce the transmitter strenghths on the phones whilst the plane is in flight.
I beleive it has been adapted to work over a standard phone/broadband line, but also the call cost is similar if not the same as using the standard mobile network.
They are hoping to introduce them so that they dont need to build too man phone masts, cost saving etc..
I hope this helps...

If your mobile has wifi you can use your wireless router and truphone to make free calls to land lines.

  RIP Dan
uses 3g. its for people with poor coverage, it also keeps you on the providers network. as the radio network is so full it takes the load off it by routing over your copper bband.
