First go with my Megs G220 (lots of pics)

Yes I decided to bite the bullet and get a G220. Today was the first chance I got to play with it.
I decided to polish my Mums car, partly because I wanted to practice, so I would fuk my car up when I did that! But mainly because the condition of the paint on my Mums car is awful! There are TONS of really bad swirls, I think the previous owner used a scouring pad to clean the car!

I used Menzerna polish (final finish PO 106 FA), and the menz polishing pad.
One thing you will notice is that although the majority of the swirls are gone, there is still, in places, a lot left. This is because I was using a non-abrasive polish. I think the final finish polish is designed to take very minor swirls, and in my case there were a lot of deeper swirls.

Any who, the pics!

Im very happy with the results, especially for my first try! If I was using a more aggressive polish, I'm sure the results would have been even better.
I was quite surprised by how 'richer' the paint looked. It actually looks metallic black instead of a crappy matt black!

What I was also surprised at is how knackering it is!! My back is killing me! Doing the lower parts of the car is really tiring, but hey.....I learnt a lot, and I'll have to see how long it is before I do the 182 (I did a hand polich a week ago, so I think it can wait a bit longer!)

Thanks

Yep, your rite, the final polish is there just to take away miror defects, it has a very light cut, to bring out the gloss in the paint. I wouldnt have bothered with the final finish, stright to the power polish on them swirls and then with the final finish. Did you seal the paint aswell?

Car looks very nice in the final pic :)

I find 106FA does have a decent amount of cut, although it does take time to break down.

What sort of process were you using? For paint in that sort of condition i'd usually go straight to something like an sfx-1, which would give you a better cut than with a polishing pad.

Yeh I wasnt sure how much the final finish would take off. I mainly bought final finish because my 182 has nowhere near that bad swirls!

Yeh I put two coats of EGP for protection :)

Good effort matey, you will find that once you use a polish with a good cut the swirls will go and will have a near perfect finish

really good improvement, excellent for a first go mate. I've been tempted to buy all this kit so many times now. My pearl black 172 is crying out for some TLC. Just don't trust myself.

I know how you feel, especially with black paint!
I was worried at first, but as I was using a final finish polish, I wasnt really worried about destroying the paint lol!
I will be a bit worried if I ever use a more aggressive polish though!!

tbh, you'd have to be a right tit to mess up the paint for a DA, especially with a soft finishing pad

good results there, probably just added a couple hundred quid to the price if you were selling as well.

thats fantastic !

can i ask how long you worked the FF on each panel, and how much you used on your pad ?.....recently been informed ive been using too much product on my pads

Thanks!
Time wise, I probably spent about 30mins on each panel, so thats per door, bonnet etc. But they were split into smaller sections.

To start with I put a big X on the pad to 'prime' it. And each time after that I only used a couple of pea sized blobs, sometimes a little more for the really bad sections of the car.

Nice results, using some intensive polish would have sped things up a lot on swirls like that.

Glad you noticed the richness it gives to the paint, that is where a machine comes into it's own.

Yeh, I can certainly appreciate that now! I dont think it will make a significant improvement on my 182, as there are no major swirls on that, but I will still look forward to seeing the results!

It will still add some extra gloss to the paint I reckon - especially using a nice finishing polish like Menzerna.

I think it'll be a while before I polish the 182 again. I did a full detail the other week, so it wont need doing again for a while. Plus Im getting tired of cleaning a car, then using it once, and it looking crap again! Damn crappy weather!

I'd have hit that with Intensive Polish on a yellow pad, followed by Final Finish on a white. Works well that combo :)

On a car that age removing all RIDS is impossible without wet sanding.
Nice results tho!

hmmm i tend to use bigger than pea sized blobs, and sometimes more than 2, ill try and cut back a bit see how i go

I may be wrong!
Its just that after a while, the pad was really 'clogged' up with polish. So I thought I was using too much.

Tbf, that car was so bad. You did an amazing job for your first time specially considering how there were scratches goin down and to the side.

I'm very impressed and you have made me want to buy a kestrel DA lol! :D:cool:

just got myself a Menzerna polishing pad, they are bloody firm for a polishing pad !.......more like most compounding pads ive got, i do wonder how harsh a menzerna compounding pad must be !

Softens up a fair bit after the first use, is probably the best polishing pad you can use D.A to correct things.

Nice one mate!

I use the menzerna polishes and think they are ace! Maybe you should have gone intensive polish on a cutting pad?

still great results though!

Yeh Im ordering some IP tomorrow :) And will have another go when the weathers a bit better. I'll be in the garage, but it'll be fekin cold in this weather!

LOL! I dont know if I should be thanked or not for that! But goo dluck with it if you decide to go for it!

You should be thanked for that, my black gold clio is a mess and the previous owner cleaned it with a sander by the looks of things.

You'll have to tell me how you got on with the polish on your clio as it'll give me an idea.

I had a go with final finish polish on my 182, and the results were slightly disappointing. Mainly because I think the paint is much harder than the Fords, so will require a more aggressive polish. I order some intensive polish today, and will have another go in a few weeks when the weather's better!

Always start with a less aggressive polish though, as this might be ok on your car :)
