Front to back problem

  BMW 328 Ci

Hi i have a 1996 to 1998 clio and i have a problem with the wiring. I had really cruddy sound to my fronts so i brought some new sony ones and all was ok. I also wanted a bit more bass so i brought a pair of 6x9s. I found there were no wires going to the back but i found the fronts had two wires going to each speaker. So me, my friend and my dad deduced that the fronts had both the front and back wires going to them. After much confusion (dont the french know the word "colour code?") i managed to re-wire the back ones (bit of red paint on them) to the 6x9s while keeping the front wire in the fronts. I turn on the sterio and only sound was comming out of the 6x9s, dam good sound but i didnt pay £40 for a pair of fronts and not have them work. What have i done? / What can i do? / Am i going to have to take it to specialist and shell out?

number 1 - what year is your car??? if it is post 98 then the front speakers must have 2 set of wires, as thery are components

number 2 - the reason you thik the sound is dam good is because the factory speakers are so bad, 6x9s ae not good speakers

basically, you need to split the cable for the front components, then plumb in your own speaker wire into the factory locations, ditch the 6x9s and get some rear co-axials is youre adamant you must have speakers in the rear

also tell your dad and your friend not to mess about with car electric unless they are certain what they are doing, its all to easy to set a car on fire through dodgy electrics

dont worry my dad is fully qualified (degree in engineering). I have pre 98 phase 2 shape. It had two wires going to the front so we split them and wired 2 to the back, 2 two the front but we lost all sound to the front??

(((The reason i need to do this is cos my car had no rears to start with)))
I should have mentioned that.

I know you guys are anti 6x9 but they are just what i need. You get good base without being ott with a sub. With fronts only the sound is high quality but go too lound and its just ear piercingly tinny.
Heres my car by the way

Hi!

If you really want to be sure that it all works properly, and if you get the best sound, then ditch the factory head unit and buy a 3rd party one. You can get a nice Pioneer HU or something similar for not all that much. Then, run your own wires to the back and the front.

Of course, this will only work if you have enough money to spare to get the new HU, and enough time to install it (or, a bit more spare money for someone else ot install it!). :)

Lastly, some others have said that 6x9" arent so good. Thats true, by and large, but if youre happy with the sound dont worry about it. If you really want good sound, pick up some good quality 6.5" speakers for the back.

As with everything else, it all depends on the money :)

Good luck, and have fun!

I already have a new head unit.

Sony CDX-MP40
Argos
£200 reduced to £150
10% Homebase discount to £135
£15 of vouchers for spend
Rduced head unit to £ 110
Free fitting
Looks good to

I think ill let my dad take one last look at it (the fitting geez didnt seem to know) then take it down get it profesionally done.

Ok, so if youve got a new head unit, then cant you just run the wires directly from the head unit to the back speakers? Or am I missing something? You shouldnt need to do any splitting or anything to get the wires down there. The head unit manual will tell you which wires need to go to the front/back.

Scott.

Yea i might do that, i had to split them before as i had a dodgy head unit that i couldnt get out cos i didnt have the pins.

Thanks

to make things simpler, go for a amp option. just connect an amp to the pre outs on your head unit (even the philips one in the car has pre-outs!) and connect the amp to the 6x9s and leave the wiring alone for the fronts - putting loads of high powered speakers on one circuit causes it to cut out and can heat the wires causing a fire. You dont need an expensive amp to just power a couple of 6x9s and anyway i though the kenwood 4-way 6x9s sounded great in my old clio (looks same as one in pic but white)

Yeah, you could do that, but I would have thought that it would be more complicated - installing a fuse at the battery, running power cable thru the firewall, ground wire from amp to chassis, remote wires to the amp, RCAs from the HU to the amp and then speaker lines from the amp to the speakers.

If theres already a new HU there... the connections are already there too. Just solder them on there and its done.

But, although I think its more complicated, I think an amp will improve things anyhow :)

The way the wiring works is at the front, the wires run from the headunit, to the small speakers in the dash, then are daisy chained to the door speakers, as you have a 1.2 i take it you have no door speakers? then in some models there are seperate wires to the rear speakers. best bet would be to upgrade that head unit, so you get 4 speaker outs rather than splitting the renault wiring.

whats so funny about that...are you a qualified electrical technician...i doubt it. Your only moaning cos you dont like 6x9s.

>> I no longer have that clio in my possession. The only problem is with that clio, your head unit is at a slant and when you go over a bump in the road it can skip. Maybe mp3 ones wont be too bad but i went for a kenwood changer in the boot.

Yer its all sorted now. It messed up cos we thought the two at the front were one for front and one for back, not that one is in and one goes out to doors. As i dont know where the rear wire goes after exiting the head unit i will wire straight from the HU.
