gear change light

i tried for the first time to get the light to flash, with nothing up to 65000rpm, is it after that!!! the engine sounded very strained, yoyu guys might say it was a glorious sound, Im not sure sometimes what the difference is!!!

Comes on at about 6,800 - 7,000 rpm on my Cup Im sure. Are you sure the 172 has the gearshift indicator, I thought it was only on the Cup?

some have it some dont depends if they fitted the light or not lol comes on in mine at about 7k i think when engine is warmed up or lower when cold but its not a shift light its an ouch your gonna hit the limiter soon light

I lit mine up continuously in 5th trying to catch 2live, on a private test track

The light comes on lower if the car is not fully warmed up...

Its not exactly in your line of sight either, like Tom I just use the rev counter.. unless I am really concentrating then I will change when I see the little green light at the corner of my eye.

dont use the thing its in a stupid position and comes on at different times, there is also an argument over whether its a gear change indicator or oops thats sore light

I have fitted the excellent unoffically launched chip from RSport and mine revs to 7850rpm, my light comes on way before but its quicker to keep reving it especially in second as mine will now do 69mph in 2nd, 98 in 3rd, 126 in 4th and i have only managed 153mph in 5th but had to slow down as ran out of room!

Only managed 153 in 5th, run out of room, bet the beach was getting closer.

Apparantly this light is on the mk1 172s aswell,

is this correct does it need activating!

Its not on the later mk1 172s. Its not much use (too small) so I wouldnt worry about it. You can install a big aftermarket gear change light for about £50 if you want one.

never seen it on my exclusive, tend not to go above 6.5k though

I see it on my mk1 172.....but I have a very early one (June 2000). I think the gear light appears on the W and some X reg 172s, then discontinued at end of X and Y.

The Exclusives were the last 172 172s built and dont have the light.

Waste of time anyway. I only ever see it after its bounced off the limiter an by then its too late!! And i only see it then cos i think sh#t shouldve looked at the rev counter!
