I am about to buy a car with the above problem.

Whats causing this? If I weld it in, am I just going to create more problems elsewhere??

Its a Valver btw.

Could this be because the engine/box aren't aligned properly?

On mine, the driveshafts knocked like f**k until we moved the bottom mount back a bit. Just wondering if thats the cause? If it needs a new box thats no bother as they're only about £50! lol.

I don't want to repair it by fitting a new box just to have it happen again in 3 months time cos of a problem elsewhere.

Or am I just making a mountain out of a molehill!!

possibly was mis-aligned putting too much stress on it yeah, maybe!

mine had lasted 7/8 trackdays then at mallory I ran some semi-slicks on the front, I think this put alot more force/strain on the drivetrain and caused it to go....was fine before that though.

If you're going to get another box try and find a newer JB3 without the circlip shouldn't ever have the problem with the diff popping it out then

JB3 (048) is the valver box, but its on other things too, there are lots of different versions of it I think....

yeah lol!

aye new'er', fortunately the run-around valver I had came with a box that had been bought from renault not long before, with the newer style diff (non circlip). Im running that now since the circlip popped in the other, didnt want to bother trying to repair it.

inherant problem IMO, dont think it's preventable. dan.wil had his pop on the line at santapod last weekend, Cliowizard had his go on the way home too IIRC

bolted is 182 style, much better

yeah, the box was a service exchange from renault, oddly its a '92 casing with brand new insides, along with the bolt in diff. Im guessing they just re-use the casings to save on cost

Am I going to have this problem in my 172 engine/gearbox combo in my valver??

heard of it a lot less, think the newer boxes are better, until they finally used a bolted retention method for the diff (182). sadly the 182 box doesn't have a speedo drive so it's a PITA to fit to older models
