Gearboxes

I've currently got the standard gearbox in my 1.6 8v clio and waswondering if by changing the gearbox to one with different ratios is it possible to increase accleration by saccrificing top end speed?

IMO it wouldn't be worth the difference, you'd have to gear it very aggresively to make a good difference and then your fuel consumption would be utterly crap on a run! plus you'd actually have to find the right box (could be easy could be impossible and buy that)so in conclusion, not worth the expense or hassle for me

If you want to keep what you've got and you want to change the gearbox, change the engine aswell :D but to do things properly you'd want/need brakes and suspension sorting so it would turn out very expensive to pay someone to do it, IMO a new car should be on the cards... :p

You could do but the gains would be minimal for most gearbox the lower ratio boxes are usually 1.2 petrols so you'll be sticking them under a lot of extra power. A rebuilt box with different ratios is expensive.
Best spend the money on smaller wheels better brakes and suspension changes personally.
Listening to an engine screeming away at 70mph is very annoying.

fair points, i'm just clutching at straws to get my car to go noticeably quicker, can afford the new cars i want at the moment.
