Not sure where to post this but I had a search and couldn't find anything recent.

Where's the best site to get an HPI done? Going to see a car tomorrow so looking for somewhere good online. Cheaper the better but needs to have a good rep.

the cheaper text based services dont include finance, so if its old enough you can maybe take the risk for the cheaper services, personally if your spending £000's whats £25 for full peace of mind?

 Maybe a 172 Cup..
Autoexpress did a test on some cars with issues, to test which checks picked what up.

Personally wouldn't trust these text things, have used Hpi and Autotrader myself....

Have you claimed with no problems you mean?
no haven't needed to claim think it was just accident history, stolen recovered, finance, if it's had a plate change and a VIN check for £4. To get a certificate and details of plate change you have to upgrade it to a £10 one.

This. I did a mytextcheck type one and it was fine...then realised it didn't show finance so swiftly did a proper HPI and it showed outstanding finance! Turned out that the account just hadnt been closed, but still, it proves that 25 quid in the scheme of things is nothing!

GF just used icarcheck I think. £10 quid for 3 checks and gave info on number of owners, reg changes, outstanding finance, written off/stolen... I know it's a cheapy but may be worth a look?!

Thanks guys.

Question about finance. The car currently has outstanding finance on it, might still go see it but where do I stand if he says that he will pay it? What can I do (if anything) so I'm covered?

Get the agreement number and pay the finance off direct. Once you have word from the finance company that they no longer have an interest in the vehicle then proceed with the sale as normal.

Could ensure it's paid personally... eg a 10K car purchase with 5K finance outstanding. You agree with the finance company to pay 5K direct to them, then agree to pay the seller 5K. I think that works?! Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

If it has outstanding finance that's fine, it's if you've already bought it and you find out it has outstanding finance you have a problem.

As long as it's paid off by the time you sign the V5 you're good.

Used hpicheck. Red flag. 03 plate, finance started 2007 and it was a Hire Purchase. The Finance house details are given, can I phone up and confirm this or does it have to be the owner of the vehicle?

I phoned up RCI (Renault finance) and confirmed the finance situation without being the owner, assume you can do the same. Mine had outstanding finance listed even though it'd been paid off, was just an admin error in not closing the account. Easy enough to check.

Alright that's kl. That's what I wanted to know.

Their not called Red Flag, no idea where that came from.

EDIT: What if the Finance people have folded and is no more? Where would I stand if I was to purchase the motor?

Ha, yeah that's obvious now I've re-read it...my bad. Too much work and not enough sleep makes me mis-read posts :p

Phone the finance house, say you want to buy the car but the owner says it has no outstanding finance. Explain you have HPI'd it and it shows they have an interest in the car and can they confirm if there is still outstanding finance or if it has all been settled.

Bear in mind HPI isn't instant to update.

Still I have no idea why I typed it, unless I mean it came up with a red flag haha.

Don't know if you'd have seen the second question? Will phone the finance people up in the morning and I'm trying to have all my questions answered as a just in case.

What are the finance company called? google them?

On my HPI it told me the car was on dealer finance with VWFS for unit stocking.

Fact he wasn't up front about it would make me walk. His character is obviously dubious, how do you know those service stamps are genuine, and he hasn't had a stamp made up....

How do you know the car doesn't actually have finance and it's an admin **** up like the one above?

Not worth ignoring a potentially good car over the sake of a quick phone call.

And lol isn't that welcome car credit?

I think the fact that it was financed by Welcome would be enough to put me off tbh.

Finance for poor/financially inept people, who probably dont have enough money to service/maintain the car properly either.

The fact he has now potentially misinformed you is yet another nail in the coffin.

Yeh I've slept on it and I'm going to walk away. Cheers for the advice guys, muchos appreciated!

And since reading threads on various forums about how Welcome seem to just accept anybody is just beyond me.
