handbrake issues.

So my handbrake has never seemed to good on a steep graident so I always put in gear as well as handbrake, today I pulled up on my grandads drive which is a slope of about 10%-15% not too sure on exact gradient. pulled the handbrake up and pulled it a bit too far had my foot on foot brake at the time and it went ping and ping upwards and slid hand off, pulled back off the drive and parked on the road feels like the cable has losened as it still holds but my dad says one of the cables on either side may have snapped, so quick questions
what can i do to fix this?
1. Such as does it need tightening again(if is possible to loosen?) or will it most likely need a new cable, im aware that i need to pads and disks within a few thousands miles
2. So will this be a good time to do this?
3. How hard is it to change disks and pads ( i am not mechanically minded but i do want to learn)
4. and if that ^ is straight forward, how hard is it to fix my handbrake issue
5. for the meantime i am going to leave in gear with handbrake on this will not cause any damage as far as i aware? if so please do tell

Sorry if I sound a bit ignorant and stupid but all help and advice will be taken on board.

Thank you Paris
