handbrake problem

  Clio 182
I parked up earlier and pulled handbrake up on my 182 a little harder than i should and now seems to be very loose. When i pull up, it seems to click at least 7 times before it wont go any further. What have i done? my mate said it could be cos i need new discs and pads, is this right? thanks a lot, all help is very much appreciated

Jack up the rear and try and spin a wheel round when the handbrakes on. It'll give you a indication as to which side is the problem and if one of the cables has snapped.

I hope you're mate isn't a mechanic.

Replace the cable completely (both sides).

My mate aint a mechanic LOL. But took my car to a few garages and they too have told me it could be the same thing about my back discs and pads are really low and could cause the handbrake to be loose. The handbrake still works, just need to pull it up further:dapprove:

have a look at either wheel to see if one of the cables has snapped - don't need to jack it up or anything - use a pair of pliers to pull on the exposed cable stop to check that the cable hasn't snapped somewhere along its length. also worth whipping off the plastic cover from the handbrake lever to see if there's an obvious problem that end

Had a similar problem on my ph1, turned out to be a seized caliper. Try pulling away, slowly, with the handbrake on see if it pulls to one side (this was done by Bucks Renault). If it does, then it might be the same fault.

ive checked under the car and no cables are hanging off. how do you remove the handbrake cover as i havent checked there? I can pull the handbrake up and still move, just with a bit more gas than usual

Thats BS. Yeah it might a become a little looser, but not needing to click that high. Cable is reasonably easy to change mate if thats what it is. Hopefully there isn't an issue with the centre section.
