Heated Rear Window

A friend has several bars of his heated rear window on his 2001 Clio not working. Im assuming its a problem with the filaments. Has anyone come across similar problems? Is it a common fault? Any ideas on a cheaper fix than a new window (400 pounds!!!!)? Hes asked me to have a look for him so any info would be appreciated.

He needs to check each element carefully, theres probably a break in them some where, this can be repaired easily with a special metalic paint thats specific for the job. Halfords do stock this.

smash the window then pay the £50 or so excess to have it fixed under his insurance policy
