hi all thanks for the quick replies.:D
the problem i have is not directly related to my diesel engine its to do with my steering. i have noticed over a period of time that there is some play in the steering:S i need to get it sorted quick as i have an m.o.t coming up soon.:(

i have looked in a maintaince manual but it doesnt seem to be covered, i have also spoken to a friend who is a mechanic and he seems to think it is some sort of universal joint but to be very carefull as there are several types of this particular part but how do i find the specific part for my model?

if it is the joint you can have them welded up to take the play out have you checked the track rod ends?

Most likely the steering column joint, very common problem on mk1s!

Not hard to change the column take your mechanic friend 30-60 minutes if he knows what he is doing! Or you can take it out and get it welded up that will stop it happening again.
