You can either fully remove them from the top of the spark plug, or just disconnect the wires from the coil.

the coils are less reliable on the non sports my mate at reno says. I've had an ht lead fail. They can kill, so don't touch them when engine's running tho. Ran like yours, have you checked them?

coils are a pian in the backside. non sports are known for chewin them especiall 1.6 lol. Rule usually is change one change them all. Although i changed one a couple months back and the others have lived on... touch wood.

yea i had to change my two middle ones now i have to change the two end ones .. really pissed me off what a way to start a week lol
read on another thread though that the ones that renault originaly fitted were bad ones in the first place and ones you have changed them all for new ones it should all be fine ... fingers crossed i am just hoping it aint ruined my new ngk sparks i put in there when i fitted the other ignition coils..

As mentioned above, if you change one, you should change them all, or the others will fail eventually, this sounds like whats happened to you m8. As also mentioned some original reno ones were shat from the start... so replacement items are better!

  1*4 phhslow
yea i just replaced the pair that had failed last time so 2 out of 4 as they work in pairs ... so in other words this was going to happen eventually lol not goood really .....

  1*4 phhslow
dont think my ht leads have failed as it is running the same as before apart from its the other plugs as i disconnected them as i did before and it stopped :( might think about changing my leads though as all the plastic has gone britle around the wires from the heat and sun etc but looks a pain in the arse job to do as i aint good with wires lol !!

Whats leads? there are no leads. If you disconnect a coil it will cut out because you take two out of circuit when disconnecting one so disconnect 4 and you will take 1 with it. its better to reach around the fuel rail and disconnect the injectors

well they work in pairs so you take one out the engine will loose pitch if the coil is ok but if the coil is bad then the enigne cuts out ..

Yeh, the AA man told me to disconnect the injectors instead of coils when i had a problem with mine b4.

i dont no were my injectors are the bloke that does mine just disconnects the wire to the coil and listens for a pitch change and if it dies then the partner coil has failed

there are a list of things that kill the packs

1. unplugging HT leads from spark plug with the engine running! pi$$es the engine management off and damages the coil packs, disconnect injector!!

2. jump starting other people with engine running, (coltage drop and spike destroys them)

3. NGK plugs are not compatible with the renault coilpacks, and will burn the coilpack out.

aaahhhh fuk then i have a whole new set of the v groove ngk in there atm so that might be why the renault ones went :( hmmmm so many things can go wrong ... get my 2 new coils this afternoon though so will see what happens again lol !!!!

I got a set of NGK plugs sat on my windowsill next to my old coil, plugs have only got bout 4o mile on them, and they burnt the pack out :( got renault ones in now, which i believe are champion!

  1*4 phhslow
is that because though that the ngk just create so much more of a spark than the champions i still have my set of bosh ones i took out before so might put them back in if i get any problems again as changing coil pack aint a cheap day out really

Standard 172 Plugs are NGK! They're the only 1's worth using!

i have them new vgroove ones placed in mine and they aint cheap i just wanted something u dont have to worry about...hhhmmm will it start in the morning when its really cold you no and i would recomend them plugs to anyone they are brilliant more responsive and all that

He has a 1.4 though smartarse!! they use different plugs!

I always thought NGKs where best, until i did 40 mile with my ngks in with the engine getting worse, then i went into work (renault) and all the techys where telling me NGK will ruin the coils! and they even had letters from Renault telling them to change all NGKs out for another brand or coil problems will arrise.

  1*4 phhslow
ooooo so might get some new champions next week then and just keep the ngks as an o crap i am in trouble and have no money scenario lol

There are 2 types of coil pack. The original SAGEM units that were fitted to all Renault 2001 > 16v K4M, K4J, F4P & F4R engines. These were renowned for failing causing the engine to misfire. Renault actually replaced these under warranty using DENSO units as they were more reliable.

Needless to say DENSO are japanese and SAGEM are French

shall i ring renault up then and ask them about it to see what the problem is and see if i keep my recipts what they can do ???

when i was in your situation, i just got complete new set of coils and a set of Renault plugs. Has been fine 18000 mile scince then!
if two of your coils are as new as you say then you may getaway with buying just two more! but thats for you to decide!

Also might be worth running a tank of injector cleaner through it, like the slick 50 stuff, i did that at the same time and it really made it run better!!

  1*4 phhslow
just put my new plugs in i did have old sagem ones in the first place... runs fine now so thats a whole new set now basically ... so maybe get some injector cleaner you say .... maybe ...sesor light came on on the way to work this morining i changed the plugs but the light is still i remember it staying on for a while last time but cant remember for how long...
i think i need a new engine mount though dunno how much they go for , or if you can bash the sides in or something sounds stupid but really dont no about them :)
