help with treadwear numbers

what do the treadwear numbers mean on the side of a tyre?? most are around 200 but ive seen some say 280,320. does this mean they are a harder/ softer compound?? is a higher number a harder compound, and if so roughly how much more life should it have in it compared to a softer tyre?

The higher the number, the better the wear rate...

i.e.

Bridgestone S-02 = 180
Toyo Proxes T1-S = 280
Goodyear Eagle F1 = 280

Hence why I knackered my Bridgestones in not many miles and the Toyos lasted longer!
