Hi Everyone

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Hi All

New on here, as I will hopefully be the owner of a mk2 172 soon. Im also after a bit of advice too :)

Ive just put a £100 refundable deposit on a 51 reg 172 with 17,000 miles on the clock. The price is £6999. I know its a bit steep, but I have aquired it from a Ford main dealer who are taking my 52 reg punto sporting off my hands. My punto has a whole list of problems which would cost me hundreds to fix, but the garage has happily taken it in. They have asked that I put a £2600 deposit down, and have given me the option of paying back the rest over either 1 or 2 years 0% finance. Im going to insist that they service the car beforehand, as it only has 2 stamps in the book, one renault and the other a non renault dealer. Does anyone else have any advice that they can give me? Ive got a copy of Evo with a buying guide for the 172 so Ive been following that. Cheers!

Welcome to the forum

That is very low mileage for the reg car so the price isn't too bad

Shouldn't it only have one? 172 service intervals are every 12k.

I think its every 12k or every 2 years. I guess 2 services is just about right, but I will still push for them to service it. Im going back today to ask them to put it on a ramp so I can check the exhaust, and ask them to let me take it on a longer test drive to check the 1st and 2nd gear knocks in case the engine mounts are gone.

Welcome to Clio Sport.

Just because a car only has low millage doesn't always mean it's a better purchase then one with more, you have no idea how it's been driven.

Thanks. Have you got any tips for tell tale signs that it has been driven aggressively? Its got absoloutely no stone chips on it, which I guess can be a good sign.

Im sure its every 12k or every ONE YEARS.

Check for knocking suspension as well.

I would check these out when out on a test drive.

A knocking sound coming from the engine bay when under hard acceleration in 1st or 2nd. If so then the engine monts need replacing.

White smoke coming from the exhaust when accelerating hard.

I don't know a great deal about cars, but if it doesn't feel right on the test drive then just walk away, theres plenty of good examples out there.

At the end of the day it may well be a perfectly good 172, and the 17k may well be honest miles

Sounds like a great deal if all the details provided are accurate. Give it a good once over and a long test drive and decide from there.
