higher miles matter?

  AMV8, Mk1 Golf
ok so im going to have a look at a few 172s today

on a 2000 car what would you class as high miles?
as i plan on doing alot of engine work anyway does this really matter?

  RS Clio 200
works it out.... average 12k a year, 6 years, 72k id say would be average.

alot id class as 85k+

would it be worth spending an extra 1.1k to have say 20k less miles? or do you think if would outwiegh what you would spend

the more miles it has the faster it is! to be fair as long as its been serviced properly it'll be fine, even better if its had oil changes every 5-10k like a lot for sale here will have had

plus depend son the miles you'll be doing, if you get a low miler but then really pile them on what's the point? :)

I bought mine with 32k on the clock almost 2 years ago, I've done another 32k since and it's just getting better :)

miles are not the crucial thing to be honest, eg 60k 172 with a full extensive service history would be far more preferable then a 40k 172 with a service history that was done by a neighbour etc using unipart bits .

just as an example.

imo any thing from 50k-80k would be ok for a 2000 172

seen quite a few 90k ph1, so no reason any other RS model shouldn't reach than amount of mile hassle free.

why?

very low mileae cars are as bad as stupidly high miles

one that has done lots of short trips will be far more worn (engine wise ) in comparison to one that has been used to cruise up and down the motorway as the engine would have been under far lees stress. and would have been used gently to warm up, short trips meaning the engine does not have a proper chance to warm up all the way through.

i think that i am correct on this one, feel free to correct me if im am not.

My 2000 clio is on 52k (ok, it's 20k below average) and it runs as sweet as anything.

My main concern wouldn't be the engine, it'd be the rest of the car!

Ive just bought a mk2 172 on 95k, paid alot less than ive seen any mk1's go for!

Full Renault history etc, did something like 72k in its 1st 2 yrs or so, up and down the motorway

Went to look at a mk1 before this, 56k on it, it was fucked. No history, rough interior and they wanted £500 more than i paid for my mk2!

Its in the best condition ive seen a 172 in, everythings works, has a few stone chips but nothing that a bonnet respray wont cure, and im loving it!

Low miles don't mean short trips in all cases, mine is low mileage but always does decent runs when used. Also is making good power according to last weeks r/road run.
