you need to go to maps and set it up from there.
you just get basically maps and directions you have to pay for voice guided navigation.

i was setting one up the other day and i found he GPS reception was poor, took a while as the antenna is at he bottom of the phone.

i need to enable something from the application settings, but what do i need to enable?!

do i need to go on wap to get them, got free internet when i get round to registering it so if i do ill wait

when you got to maps it should connect to the net automatically, if it cant gonnect then you have to enable by going into maps, options and then select you internet profile i.e WAP or GPRS.

what network are you on?

im on orange.

found out how to download something which i have to pay for, which im guessing is the maps?

is it worth the money, £45odd for a 3 year subscription...

is the guided sat nav an extra cost or just a setting?

The routing on the maps application isn't the best to say the least. If you want tomtom drop me a pm but it doesn't work with the build in gps receiver atm so you'd need a bluetooth one.

so is it not worth the £45?

i wont be using it for long journeys etc, more as just a back up/gadget to brag about in the pub kind of thing...

I've had my N95 since Saturday, its good for business and the net on the move but i really cant see the point in it unless you actually need it, the sat nav it questionable, as it says it needs to use your network, so is it actually costing money everytime you use it??

Tom tom you say??

i get 2 months free internet on my phone, so does that include the sat nav?
if its the case then ill just buy a month liscence for the software or something and see how it goes on the free net.

might ring orange tomorrow and get it explained.

Unless you use the nokia maploader app to download the maps to the memory card, it'll need to connect to the net to download map content when you use it.

Ah i dont have a memory card in mine...i may also add that my phone was sim free so this might be stopping me using certain features??

no no no no no!. lol

The map data is downloaded into Cache memory on your n95. The only information downloaded is map information for the immediate surrounding area that gps thinks you are. costs very little. once the map is downloaded it remains on the phone and is replaced when new map data is downloaded when you move into an area that you dont have data for.

im also on orange and the free internet is only evenings and weekends for two months btw.

also there is a "maps" application for your computer to download from the nokia europe website. it downloads all map data for the country you choose and transferrs it to the memory card in your phone, so you dont have to download map info using ur n95. but it will take up alot of memory space.
get a 2gb memory card. micro sd type.

ah right,

so it is going to cost me everytime i use it?how big is the area covered, i.e. if i just download derby then dont download another it will not cost me?

thanks for the post though, might have saved me some serious cash!

  RARE Unmolested Corsa sxi
no, not everytime only when it needs new data for an area not stored in memory.

i live in ebbw vale in south wales, quite a big town, and it downloads all of the map data for it in a couple secs and costed me very little in data charges.

when using ur n95 to get maps, you cant choose what area, it automatically downloads map data according to where the gps thinks you are.

so can it only store 1 area in the memory at a time? sorry im a bit confused by all of this!

also, with the free internet, i guessing i dont have to pay to go onto the net, but when downloading the map i have to pay whilst that is downloading?

  RARE Unmolested Corsa sxi
no, depends on how much memory you have, in the options there is a slider bar to allow you to set the amount of memory you want the maps application to use.

the more you allow, the more data it will save.

eg, if you get all the data for derby, then leave derby, it will still store derby and the new location, as long as there is enough memory. if the memory space runs out, it will override the oldest map data stored in memory.
get a 2gb micro sd card.
free net is free whatever you use it for.

you should adda bundle. i added a 10mb bundle for about £8 a month extra on my bill.

10mb is more than enough for the avergage mobile web user.

i dont use the mobile web at all really, never had any need to.

right, so i can just calculate how much each map size is, and then work out how much memory to use, awesome.

how much does it cost per mb to download?

  RARE Unmolested Corsa sxi
you cant choose the map to download, its entirely automatic, based on your gps location.

just as an example, it will download all the relevant map data for a 50 mile square radius of your pin pointed gps location. i stress i dont know the exact radius, but i think thats about right.

the maps are very small in size, as there are no voice commands. (gotta pay for them)

i think orange charge about 50p a megabite.

but i doubt the map will be nowhere near that large.

im not sure to find out how large the maps are, but if you use the file explorer facility in the n95, you may be able to find the folder where that map data is stored.

nice one, cheers for all the info.

is there an option to buy the voice commands for the area of map downloaded and this is tored on the memory aswell, or do you need to do this everytime u load a route?
can you still set a route and follow it without the voice commands?

  RARE Unmolested Corsa sxi
i think its an add on to the maps applicaition on the n95 to get voice commands. it then increases the size in mb of every map that is downloaded in future, as it included voice data. not worth the money, imo.

you can still set a route and follow it as it will be highlighted in red when you set ur destination, and will move in real-time as you follow it.

it works quite well, imo. but only on foot, cant really substitute it for a dedicated in-car system.

but i bet it isnt really "unlimited". that fair usage policy that most providers talk about is fairly vague.

although it is expensive., i admit, but orange is the only 3G signal i can pick up round my area, so im kinda stuck really.

  Better than yours. C*nt.

10Gb fair usage - tell me honestly when you're going to use that on a 384kbit connection...
