how does the self adjust system work on a clutch

  1996 Valver
There is a cam type system on the back of the peddle, it take's up slack as the clutch is worn. (or at least this is on the MK1's)

I would suggest a new cable, yours might be stretched!

its a spring that takes up the slack,if your clutch cable was worn excessively you would be having the opposite problem and for this a shim might work.
but if its biting at the top a shim wont make any difference. it is a sign that your clutch could be on its way out though

if its a cable operated cluth you should be able to adjust it. Is there a threaded portion on the end? If so wind the nuts in/out until the pedal is at the desired height and the biting point is in the right place, if there is no adjustment left, the cable is stretched and its time for a new one.

If you want a deffinate way of correcting the bite point, get a new clucth cable and a new 'cam gear'' aragement on the back of the peddle.
