How long before giving it beans?

  Breaking A 172 Replica
How long should you let the car warm up for before giving it beans?

I always understood it was when the temp guage came to the point at where it stays but I was then told this is just water temp and oil takes much longer to warm and lube the engine properly.

Thanks

15 mins for me

But lol I've a neighbour with a modded 275bhp Celica that gives it everything within 2 mins of starting from cold every morning, was behind me the other morning and nailed it on main road just after our street, god knows what damaged he's doing

wait till you reach temp.... then add 10 mins for oil to catch up, then leather the fecker!

thats my philosophy anyway....

wait a little bit after the water temp is up, as this warms up a bit before the oil. i usually judge by the engine though. when revs drop suddenly between gear changes its cold but when they tend to fall slower its safe to give it some. :)

Yeah I know what you mean daveJM about the difference in engine behaviour.

For some reason though, mine sometimes feel quicker when I first get it going :S

Maybe something to do with coolness of the air in the morning.

My 206 used to have an oil temp gauge, was well handy.

Used to take around 20 minutes at about 30-40 mph (constant) and around 10 mins at 70mph to warm up nicely.

I never take the clio over 3200 until it's been running a good 20-25 mins.

there's no set time as it depends how you drive when its warming up. just be aware that the oil takes longer than the water. mines quickest when its just about warm and hasnt been driven hard yet....seems to go like the clappers then!!!:D

matt - wish clio's had an oil temp!!

What sort of damage results?

Is it just increasing the rate of wear of key components or are things just likely to brake there and then?

if oil isnt up to temp you increase engine wear. but then again, most renaults produce more power when they are over 40,000 miles imo so maybe thats not a bad thing ;)

Oh right ok so it isn't really a major issue if you are only have the car for a couple of months?

Yeah, will be. My dads X5 has lights that go out, round the rev range when its warming up saying how far to take it to. It takes about 25 mins before the last light is out.

Its a 4.6 v8 so needs loads of oil. Probably as the more oil you have, the longer it take. Like water in a kettle lol

Aslong as no damage will result in the next few months then I am not too bothered about ragging it.

The trouble I find is all my journeys are on the A1 so I have to accelerate from 10-70 quickly within a minute of starting the engine!

could you not just leave it ticking over for a while ?? or would that not warm it up properly

Yeah I guess I could but my first lesson is at 9.15, I live 15mins away and I tend to leave gettting up till about 8.50. Time is precious!

In those cases i try use the torque to get around faster lol.

In the same boat as you mate. Always late for uni and my road leads out on to a dual road with 60 limit and you cant see the cars coming till you on it lol.

Usually just boot it to 3k and change.

Yes mate, I am.

Does it make any difference to the lumpy idle on cold at all??

Ive not noticed that from the remap i dont think... could be but after a few mins its bang on. Might be due to some of the other mods. Its just really hesitant and sound very farty first thing... pops on lift off in the morning and i dont even have a sportscat any more ! lol

I use Silkolene 0W-40, so 5mins warm up is more than fine, car wont be mine when it reaches more than 70K anyway..
