as long as you have a certificate with the ncb on from your las insurance, i dont think they do go out of date?

It is usually 2 years from when you last insured a vehicle in your name using the NCB.

:( i might aswell cancel my current policy i have now, i was gonna let it run to get an extra ncb but there will be no point if im gonna loose it anyway. might aswell get money back from insurers.

Yep they usually specify that the previous notification of NCD is no older than 2 years, some companies want to see proof of one year!
It is a bit of a farce, I think it should be raised to at least 3 years specifically for people like yourself, they'll start taking licences off us if we can't / choose to not have a car for a few years next!.

why not buy a £50 metro or somthing and insure it as a rebuild, so it will not actually be driven, that way keeping up the no claims?

won't cost much at all however you will have to find a specialist company to do this i think, kind of like a kit car policy whilst it is being built...

Buy a shitter, keep it in your garage/ parents drive, and insure it tpft. Wont cost much, but will save you lots should you come to get another car after uni.

You could, get insured on another car as a second driver with a company which still allows you to build / keep NCD and just pay the extra on that policy.

Although I wouldnt put it past insurers to worm their way out of giving you discount by expecting you to have the NCD built up on your own policy for any period where you were without a car when you come to take put a policy again in the future.
In this instance you should get insured (when you are a car owner again) with the same company (even if they are not the cheapest) as they would have to honour the NCD they allowed you to build up while you were a second driver with them.
