How much to set up a website? (to sell stuff)

  Clio 182
What sort of costs am I looking at if a) I did it myself or b) paid someone to set up a site for me?

There's no easy answer Karen.

You could setup the most basic website with domain and hosting for a tenner or there's the other end of the spectrum running in to thousands.

Without knowing what you want it's a hard question to answer properly.

Start a site, and use eBay.

Advertise your site on your adverts and promote a 5% discount of similar by ordering from the website directly. Best way to get customers to your site ordering as it will take 1-2 months to feature on Google in any decent ranked position.

For 10 pages, you're probably looking at £500+ for anything decent

To do it yourself, would cost around £10 for a domain, and £40per year for hosting.

To pay someone to create you an online store, would cost around £500-£700 on average.

If you want some free Ecommerce software, try www.magentocommerce.com

It's even better than software you pay for would you believe it!!

Host it with a company called www.unitedhosting.co.uk (which is who I use) on their cheapest package and if you ask nicely they will even install it for you so all you need to do is upload products, set up paypal with it, etc, etc and United Hosting may even offer some advise on Magento as they know a bit about it.

Cheers for all the info, I'll have a read up and think over the weekend.

It's purely for selling stuff on, I'm wondering if an ebay shop would be more cost effective.. at the moment I don't really want to be laying out too much..

Thanks :)

Without traffic independent shop sites are just dead in the water, and quality traffic costs much more than the website setup. You are much, much better selling on ebay as someone already said, or at least directing people from ebay to your site :)

free hosting is crap...paid hosting is good and cheap. .co.uk is £3 a year. If you want success then don't skimp on costs as these things come cheap anyway!

Someone I know asked me to do them a website ages ago, and they have ended up doing it themselves with free hosting and some free site building software. Looks OK other than the page is FULL of adverts, which are nothing related to them at all...crap and makes the company look cheap!

eBay is defo your best bet to start with, then.....when things get going properly look into an online shop, but even then..... anyone can have an online shop....its having a good one thats been developed well and with good SEO that makes the difference. Not forgetting the most important part.....MARKETING! No good if you have a shop full of products to sell, but no visitors to the site!

I do marketing for a range of online retailers and make one or two of them around £30k of turnover each a month and iv only just started!! ;)
