but the stupid thing is that I could drive away from an MOT that I've just passed and then get nicked by the police couldn't I? I thought they had different rules about being 1.6mm across the whole tyre? My memory fails me in my old age lol

1.6mm across CENTRE 3/4 of tread and for 90% of the circumference.
