Insurance won’t renew my policy unless I MOT car

  200,182 Trophy, Cup
I got a call from Greenlight Insurance on Tuesday leaving me a message to say my current insurer won’t renew my policy because the car is not MOT’d. It’s for my Clio 182 Trophy which has been SORN’d for the last couple of years.
It seems strange, I would have thought they would welcome the reduced risk of a car that is sat garaged.
I haven’t had chance to speak to them yet but wondered whether anyone else has encountered this

I was under the impression that a vehicle has to have an MOT and be taxed to be insured. Every insurance company I've dealt with has also said this.

I had a vehicle recently that I was going to sorn. I called my insurance up to see if I could insure it just to keep it in my garage whilst sorn and they refused

Yes when I sorn my Impreza to garage it I called up expecting a discount as wasn’t going to be used and mot had ran out that week and they wouldn’t continue to insure it this was a while ago tho

No, it’s has to be insured and MOTD to be taxed but not the other way round. I have 5 motorcycles and a similar number of cars all SORNd some not MoTd and I’ve never had a problem before

I kinda see why.
If you claimed on the policy they are expected to fix a car that isn’t road worthy.
Could be a right can of worms for them.

It seems a bit odd that they won't cover a sorn car for fire and theft, maybe they think someone would bother to insure a car but not mot or tax it before hitting the roads? There are some policies available that will cover you while sorn though.

Does that mean you have to trailer it to the MOT station?

I sorned and garaged my 182 last year. I phoned Adrian Flux to cancel my insurance , the woman i spoke to said they can insure my sorned car. The car did have an MOT at the time though. I didn't take her up on the offer so I don't know how much it was.

This. You need to specifically request Laid up cover, it should be considerably cheaper as no road risks are included.

It’s sorted now. Seems the Insurer were concerned the car was being used on the road without MoT, I would have thought a quick check on the dvla site by them would have answered their concerns, it’s been sorned for many months !

I was hoping to insure my track car before driving it to its MOT not after, will have to have a word with Greenlight in a few weeks, I didnt think this would be a problem though but perhaps im wrong!
