Someone working from home says they get nothing better than 256k apparently there ?

I live down south, I am simply asking if this could be possible.

I know Glasgow is large, but I am not from there, so don't know if there are issues or areas as to having difficulties with broadband!

Depends where they are based in glasgow (its rather large)

Virgin - 2MB upwards to 20MB.

That shows that exchange handles up to 8mbit.

Adsl max = upto 8 mb.

Enter a postcode that isnt the exchange and it will say the estimated speed you get.
