Internet Payment Security

Does anyone know how things work with credit card payment online if you are scammed?

I know there is a chargeback thing that credit card companies can do but will this be availiable with all c/cards and do you have to prove anything before they will put through the chargeback?

The reason I am asking is that I am about to make a large purchase (£1000+) for something and though I am 99% sure of the sellers credentials I would like to have the added security of knowing I could get my money back if something went wrong.

Has anyone had to do this and if so what happend?

Thanks for the advice - I'll have a look at those sites. What about just the security on a credit card payment what sort of protection is there?

So does no-one know what the sitution would be if I were to, for example, buy an item off someone through paypal but didn't recieve it so put through a chargeback?

Would I be likely to recoup my money?

Why was this thread moved to technology BTW? wouldn't have thought it would really come under that category as it's more of a general question about credit cards.
