iPad or second hand MacBook?

Looking for some advice on what to get myself ? I am in the Market for either a iPad or a second hand MacBook. Wondering what peoples opinions were ? And what is things to watch out for when buying a second hand MacBook and what could I get for around £500-£600? Good spec?
