is this legal?

hi guys me n old man going to pick up a car next week. the thing is, its got no MOT and no tax. it had been put through the mot last week and failed on 2 minor things which have no been put right (with receipts to prove) but the seller doesnt have the time to get an mot on it and just wants it sold.

the car doesnt look suspicious and actually looks very nice, but the only thing is we cant get a trailor to get the thing back home.

my question is, if we actually do have the car booked in for an mot back at a local garage can we still drive the car back providing that we are insured on it?its a 200mile trip back...

any help would be great

Its Iffy at best, the rule states "nearest convenient test station" so it would be gilding it a bit to claim the nearest one was 200 miles away.

the only reason why im taking it back 200 miles away is because its going straight to my engine builder whose gonna strip the engine so the car will be sorn asap anyways, kinda pointless for me to get an mot thinking about it?

no you cant, coppers have NPR systems that tell them even if they are driving past that the car has no Tax and Insure. they can impound the car and crush it with 14days. but then again you may get lucky and not meet a copper. not a fan of uninsured drivers tho!

I can understand your not wanting to MOT it if it's going off the road for a period of time anyway, but as Brian says it wouldn't really be legal to drive it over such a distance without an MOT... If I were you I wouldn't risk it, I'd just stick it on a trailer.

This is the best reason not to do it, No Tax, No MOT = Uninsured.

But if it's not legal to drive it on the road, that would surely invalidate the insurance? Why add to the uninsured vehicles on the road... to say there are already lots on the road is not really a valid excuse and a bit juvenline. I'm sure there are people on this forum who have been involved in an accident with an uninsured driver and it probably ruined their day somewhat!

Not to mention the fact that with the advent of ANPR you're possibly more likely to get tugged, depending on what databases they've now got it linked into. Certainly it picks up cars with no tax/insurance...

a decent 2.0diesel shud be ok tho...

For starters I believe as a general rule the vehicle towing should be at least 1.5 times the weight of what it's towing... and you'll want it to have a reasonable amount of power.

I personally would attempt it with a minimum of a decent-sized diesel car. Check the car manual for towing limits.

Have you got AA recovery or similar ? Maybe you could "break down" and get taken home on the back of a trailer ? Failing that, I got a car delivered for £1 / mile ONE WAY only a while ago off some bloke advertising on Ebay. By the time you've paid for fuel there and back it probably wouldn't cost much more to get it delivered. Legal and above board too.

Its all very risky for 200miles, you would probably get away with it, but if you had an accident and your insurance invalidated you could be in the poo. How much is it to hire a trailer or one of those towing frame things.

Towing frames, or A brackets as they are called, don't negate the need to have the vehicle Taxed, Insured and MoT,d.

Only a full lift gets you round that.

i got a car at the auctions once with a m8 he drove the car i went in front an his bro stayed behind all the way home (bout 4 miles lol)
the reason we did that was he had insurance for a day thru norwich union but car had no tax, mot was there though, wouldnt recomened it though 4 200miles lol

^^^ It's not your driving mate it the others doesn't matter how safe you are thers always some t**t out ther that seems to want to bin it into your car. trust me, my car has the scars to prove, doesn't matter if you caused it or not, MAKE SURE YOU ARE INSURED you'll be damn glad to have it should something ever happen.

ok guys have got it sorted, ive got a friend down south who has a traders insurance policy, he's agreed to drive the car back for a day wages (400 miles were travelling) so £100 plus fuel

happened to a mate of mine, had a 1.4 corsa, not standard. he didnt pay his tax and they ended up towing it away, took it to the impound and crushed it.
