Laptop Problem

Hi guys,

My laptop for some reason just keeps turning itself off for no apparent reason.

It usually happens when the computer is being used to its potential such as when watching a short video on it but will also just turn off when browsing the web.

It's always connected to the mains so it's not the battery which is dying.

It's as though the computer is somehow over-heating maybe? Or could it be another problem?

I've checked the power management options in control panel to see if it's set to hibernate, turn-off or go to standby after a certain amount of minutes but it's all set to "never".

Anyone shed any light?

Right give this ago:

Right click on 'My Computer'
Click 'Advanced' tab at top.
Under start-up and recovery click 'settings'

Make sure 'automatically restart' is UN-TICKED..

I had the same problem, and this fixed it...

What make/model is it? Had a similar problem with my Dell 5150, turns out the m/b can bend and break pins if it rests on your lap or you pick it up by the corner, would just turn off at random intervals :(

Overheating most likely...

Fixes are re-paste the chip and clean out the fan and heatsink

It's an Advent 7037. I'd say its over 2 years old.

I tried the above by unclicking the restart button but still had the same problem like 2 mins after it.

At the moment it seems to be happening every 15 mins or less. It's really starting to annoy me.

Maybe time for a new one? What's some good deals on laptops? would I be better going for a PC?

I tend to leave the laptop on maybe 6-8 hours a day and use it between those hours. Sometimes i'll walk away from it and leave it downloading but I wouldn't say it's on anymore than 8 hours a day.

is it really hot underneath where the cpu is?, my sony vaio used to do it, i gave the vents a good blow and all sorts of crap flew out it, got one of they laptop coolers and its been fine since.

should really only need to use these with p4's etc all the new mobile cpus stay very low in temperature

Aha...lol!

My mate has an Advent 7037 too, and he has exactly the same problem, I took it upon myself to fix it for him and whilst researching on tinternet, it became apparent its a design flaw with this laptop.

His workaround for it is to prop it on books or something to allow air to circulate because the retards put the fan underneath the lappy.

Well i've tried that but still the same problem. It is REALLY hot underneath the laptop.

I've got it sat on my lap as I type this and its almost burning my legs.

If its a design flaw then there doesnt really appear to be a fix for it.

What laptop would you suggest getting? which doesn't suffer from this kinda of problem.

I need a laptop really as I don't have enough space or a PC.

Personally mate I could quite easily recommend a Dell laptop, at work we have about 40 Dell's, and I rarely have anything go wrong with them, or have any failures - except some dumb rep dropped theres, cracked the screen and a new screen was £586 :-s

Can get a Dell D600 for like £300 on eBay, but we just started getting the new range in Dell D620, dual-core and widescreen, costs us £620 per unit.

So my recommendation would be a Dell - price wise you can't knock them.

^Over priced sh1te.

Frankly wouldn't touch Sony after they repeatedly hand the shaft to their customers. Plenty of better specced lappies for that sort of cash, and with better service.

I didnt say sony as a company were brilliant.. but there viao's are very good. I use a lot of them in my work... or rather I use a lot of brands of laptops in my work maybe 20-30 different laptops.. Viao's are the best.

How much would it roughly cost to get my laptop fixed? Ive actually moved the laptop onto a kind of stand now with air getting to it down the back of my table at the bottom right (where the fan is) and it's been working ok so far.

Other than this little niggle the laptop is very good.

And these 20-30 laptops are identically specced?

There are many better bang-for-buck laptops than Viaos.

Chris, sadly it's not something you can 'fix' it's an inherent flaw in the design of the venting system. My only suggestion would be to either open up the laptop, and use some compressed air to clean the dust around the components, or to actually change the fan for one that has a better CFM rating than the existing solution.

Failing that, it's a non-starter.

Dell have/are going downhill.

6 months ago I would say Dell.

Now depending what you want, Sony Vaio or HP, then Dell

Ozzy, Vaios are only overpriced when bought straight from Sony, otherwise they are very competitive.

I recently purchased a Dell 9400 Inspirion. Had it four weeks and I'm very impressed with it! It's a core duo with 2gb ram and it performs very well! Customer Service was brilliant. They phoned me to confrim details at every stage of the build. They even phoned after the courier had arranged a delivery time to make sure I was happy with my allocated time slot!

I've ordered one for a friend as well and his is also very good. i'd definately reccommend them! Especially if you can catch them at the right time of month when they have double memory and harddrive upgrades!

Well speaking from a business POV, I have no qualms with Dell at all.

Show me a dual core widescreen laptop for £600 by Sony, and i'll show you my arse :)

Wll I guess you've come up trumps with what I asked for, PM me your email addy and i'll send you the pics.

Just a shame the spec's don't match upto the Dell comparatives until ou get into the £900/£1100 bracket.

Fujitsu laptops are pretty good these days too.

Hmm, not stictly true.

That Sony I posted has this spec:

1.6 intel Core Duo
512MB Memory
80Gig HD
DVD RW / CD RW

The comparable Dell by price (Inspiron 6400)

1.6 intel Core Duo
1024MB Memory
80Gig HD
DVD RW / CD RW

The Dell is £15 cheaper. Both have all the goodies etc etc Wireless for example. Plus the Sony looks awesome.

I'm saying Dell are naff, just that Sony arent naff.

There are many better bang-for-buck laptops than Viaos.

Of course they are not the same spec. Everything from low end to top end laptops.

I have a lot of experience with varying brands and specs of laptops.. I would buy a viao, more expensive than simmarly spec'd laptops, but better build and better components.

My Hubby is into computers big time and he recomends either Lenovo or Acer. He has just got a new Lenovo and reckons it's the mutts nuts. I have got his old Acer and quite frankly I can't praise it enough. Mine stays on 24/7 and sits on one of those overbed tables. It never overheats and is 100% reliable.

Hubbys Lanovo was £870+vat
My Acer 18 months ago was £670+vat.
