LEDs as sidelights

What is road legal and what isn't?

Standard sidelight bulbs are rubbish :dead:

LED's aren't legal, but if they're white enough, i think u can get away with it.

Ah right, from the amount of threads on here about them i assumed some of them were road legal

These are the ones fitted in mine . They match the xenons perfectly .

LED side lights only look good with xenon lights, other wise they will look too bright compared with the main beam.

LED's as sidelights aren't legal full stop, but most people get away with it so long as they aren't the blatant blue ones! lol!

I keep killing the ones from Ultraleds with heat from the main bulbs though, plus that site removes even slightly negative feedback in the comments column so don't take it as gospel that they're great

Apparently they have some new metal-ringed ones now though so hopefully they'll last a bit longer. I think someone on here's tried them but I can't remember their username now.

I switched to the proper PIAA sidelight bulbs - look light blue and never got pulled with them, but blue painted stuff comes off if the MOT guy decides they're illegal 'cos they're not manky yellow and changes them

answer me this then if leds are illegal why has the audi r8 and a few others got led sidelights? makes no sense to me

my UltraLED bulbs as linked to above have been in the car with Xenons for 7 months... they're fine, as are many other people's on here.

had led sidelights, indicators, rear lights and fog lights (not that i use them mind) for years now, just upgraded all to 1W leds as well. never had a problem, been through services, MOTs, police checks (when it was broken into).

colour bulbs are illegal for road use. xenon look ones are illegal.

my Clio always passed MOTs with LED sidelights.

ATR keeps melting them though, must be too hot next to the main beam.

they look so much better than the original sidelights. Is it exactly those in that link?

Yep , same as in the link . £2.00 each . They can be a bit of bugger to fit on the offside due to the aircon . I've sussed it though . Get yourself a piece of 10mm plastic tubing , put the led in the tube , then hold the the bulb holder with your left hand and push the led into the holder using the tubing. Job done , only takes a couple of seconds then ;)

Proper Xenons are only about 35 watt though, aren't they?

In which case they're very probably running a lot cooler than my PIAA bulbs! lol

I have them, the only thing I don't like about them is that it has a direct light output. So I've ordered some new ones, and lets just hope they don't blow.
I've had those metal ones for about a year now, first next to halogens and then Xenon's in the polo. And now next to the xenons in the clio.

That's right.
