Macbook Vs Philips X59: About to purchase.

Right, I'm about to purchase a laptop. I need help in reaching a decision.

I'm doing away with my desktop. I have 19" TFT screen, and bluetooth keyboard+mouse which I'll plug in whilst at home. On the move, I'd like something portable so either:

1) Philips X59 for £540. 1.6 ghz. Very small and light. Very nice screen. Feels a bit plasticky. DVDRW DL icluded. Vista premium as std. Claimed battery life of 4hrs.

2) Macbook 2 ghz for £650. 600g heavier. Bigger too. Obviously better built. CDRW instead of a DVDRW. Don't intend on using tiger (because all my software is PC based, from Office to Photoshop). Claimed battery life of 5 hrs.

Opinions? Other pros/cons? Any better deals out there?

If you arent using OSX then dont bother with the mac.

I have a 2ghz MB, and im dead chuffed with it. Runs vista faster than my new desktop.
But as a pure windows machine its a waste.

Ok, so from an OS point of view it's a waste.

What's the durability of the Macbook like?

I suppose something that'll take daily transport/useage is also what I'm after.

The philps has the same feel as those Advent/PakBell laptops you see about. Is that a concern for long term usage (I don't want cracks appearing over time!).

Well the mb isnt exactly solid, its a thing of beauty.
The plastic scratches easy, the vaios are good.

Im realy careful with mine.

Are you sure thats right about the mac not having a dvd-rw drive? its shocking if thats the case, thought they were standard on everything now :S

I have a Macbook Pro and a Dell D420.
If you're going to be using Windows, 100% do not buy the Mac.. whilst it works, it's just silly.. the Dell is better for Windows work.. and it'll be the same between as the Philips.

Why do you even need to contact Apple?

ALL technical support can be done by a 3rd party Apple Service Provider?

I've found the entire Apple system 100% faultless up to now..

Broken ipods etc being returned under warrenty and coming back still broken with added marks and scratches. Granted its been a while since I looked into/saw anything about it so it might have gotten better.

Ah, I don't use my iPod at all.. :)

The Macbook Pro, has been fixed twice - one when the battery went crap and then one when the power adapter cable broke - absolutly faultless.. they picked the laptop up (or just the adapter), fixed it, and delivered me it back.. AWESOME. That's www.jigsaw24.com

I bought my MBP direct from Apple, too.. :)

Seems to have gotten a lot better then by the sounds of it, haven't really given them any notice for a long time tbh. They more than put me off any of their products a long time ago.
