Masking

i am having my 16v badges sprayed on my car but i still want the silve shinny 16v any ideas how the best way 2 mask it off is

i know what ya mean... u want the numbers silver with sprayed background.... i think u can get masking fluid to paint on the bits u dont want sprayed first and then it just rubbs off after.

I was thinking off pva glue as it comes off later , but not sure if it would work

yeah pva would work, but might be hard to remove cos of the strength of the paint ull be puttin over the top of it.

so the silver badge goes onto the black background. u wanna paint the black bit but keep the silver.. silver?.. ok just paint the entire badge as it is.. dont mask it or anythin. when its dry, get a stannley blade n cut around carfeully the 16v (where the silver meets the black). then scrape off the paint on the badge with your finger nail.

if you dont prep the badge, the paint wont have nothin to key to and will just rub off the silver bit.

will work trust me

i aint done this no, i dunno what the badges look like lol. maskin tape is a nono as ull get a nasty line. fine line is a nono as the badges are too small. i dunno about this liquid stuff that u paint on. but im guessin it would leave a terrible line where the silver meets the black.

ima prepper n painter, n i know if u paint onto a shiny surface without preppin( especially chrome) , u can scratch it off with ure finger nail.

dont bother primin em, too small, wont make any difference really.

can sum1 get a pic up of what these badges look like?

ide suggest painting it the colour you want (without any maskin). scratch off the paint from the silver, and then laquer over the lot. that way u wont have any edges

Im now thinkin it may be a lot easyer to just have the whole lot painted , but i have seen tehm done with the 16v Left alone

n theyre part of the actual moulding n wont come off?

aint renault f*ckers lol. hmmm a challenge. to be honest, unless your a sh*t hot masker, n spend an hour or so maskin them out properly.. the best bet ide say... is give the black a grey scotchbritin, dont scotch the silver, be very careful not to scotch the silver at all.. but get close as u can to it.

paint them whatever colour, without maskin.. jus paint the lot. let it dry.. then do a line with a stanley around the whole of the 16v.. then scrape it all off with ya nail. if you do scotch the grey it will be harder to take the paint off.

when you got the paint off n it looks tidy, jus laquer over the lot of it, includin the silver bit.

thats how ide do it, im sure someone will offer a different suggestion

it is alot easier to just paint the lot, but if you want the silver kept silver... then keep the silver mate! dont take the easy option, people will look n say how the f*ck did you do that, that must have been a mission

...spray the whole lot then get some chrome paint and hand paint the 16v. then laquer over the lot.

good idea mate, if u look closely tho ull see that its been hand painted. but alot easier option for ya if u choose

Yeah was gonna suggest that, paint the whole thing black, paint the 16v silver by hand and then laqure over the whole lot

I do a bit of watercolour painting and often use masking fluid to keep areas white or for painting later, in the case of colour washing a large area etc, and I think you will find this will do the job for you. It is actually liquid latex which comes with a little brush and you brush on where required and it dries quite quickly. After you have sprayed round the masked ares, you can then rub this off with your finger and your masked area will have been protected.

It is the bottle on the left, available from art/craft shops about £4
