MGC Servicing - Nottingham

  Bus w**ker
What is it that you're after having done and where abouts in Notts are you? I've not used MGC but I'm sure I remember reading a good review about them on here, I'd say search but you've no chance with it being three letters.

Aux belt, CAM belt and 36k service. Got a quote off them and they are over 50% cheaper than Sunwin Renault. Guy on the phone sounded really professional and that he knew what he was talking about. Read quite a few brilliant reviews about the place, just wondered if anyone on here had used them before.

Did you check that they had the tools and have done the job before? Also how much did they quote if you don't mind saying?

Mines in on Monday at Mark Lightfoot's in Ilkeston. £450+VAT, all genuine Renault parts too.

50%?!
I would put money on it not being a like for like quote. I expect they are using non genuine bits and not changing the aux belt tensioner. Renault would of quoted for cambelt and aux belt kits. Worth checking what they are doing as I can't believe anywhere charges less than £50/hr labour these days.

I rang Sunwin in Ilkeston for a price last month, just to give me a bench mark as there is no chance I'd let them touch my car EVER. They quoted me £870 all in for aux & cam belts, all tensioners and cam seals on my Ph1 172 which is an air con model. Half of that is only £435 so I'd be concerned that they aren't replacing something or not using genuine Renault parts.

I think, so correct me if I'm wrong:
Cam belt, tensioners and seals are about £170.
Aux belt and tensioners around £120.
So that's £290 on parts alone. The job takes 5+ hours so either they are charging £29 (or less) an hour labour or something is missing.

Nick at Hillpower quoted me £550 and Mark Lightfoot £450+VAT (£517.50).

I'd ring and confirm somethings with them if I were you.

This is what Renault would change:
Parts prices:
7700106271 CORE PLUG LA 7.90
7700274026 PLUG LA £4.04
7701476674 KIT CAMBELT £160.39
7701477519 ACESS BELT KIT £127.57

Parts total £299.90

Book time is 5.7 HR

@ £70 / hr that give you a total quote of £758.75 INC

MGC quoted £420 for the Cam and AUX belts - Sunwin Renault in Sherwood quoted £800. Sorry, not over 50% cheaper, but not far off. To be honest with you all I am so unsure about who to trust and who not to trust. I have heard really bad things about Sunwin Renault. There is a Renault specialist in Grantham that quoted around £600. I don't know what to do for the best. Not mechanically mided at all so even if I do ask these garages questions they could quite easily bull s**t me and I would not know any different.

Who's the one in Grantham?

I'd avoid Sunwin like the plague and I'm still dubious on the MGC quote TBH. You could try Hillpower over Derby way (07973342081) but be warned Nick the owner has a lot of personal stuff going on at the minute and it's difficult to get hold of him, when I spoke to him he said it could take him five days to do the aux and cam belt work on mine.

If you want to go to Mark Lightfoot he is in Ilkeston just opposite the Tesco there, site with his address is on google. His number is 01159328396. If you can wait till Monday afternoon I can let you know how he's got on with mine, but he has done them before and has all the tools required. He's done work on all my families cars over the past few years and always done a bang up job for a reasonable price. Replaced the O/S CV boot on my 172 last week and only charged £50, was done in an hour. Oh and he has a very nice Porsche GT3 RS lol.

Have you tried Birchdown? They seem really trustworthy and competitively priced.

They post on here.

AC Williams in Grantham - http://www.acwilliams.co.uk/index.asp

Will give Mark Lightfoot a ring and get a quote off him. I have heard of Birchtown before but it's a little bit far to travel to be honest. Would be interested to hear how he gets on with yours Symon. Thanks very much everyone for your opinions/advice - much appreciated.

Never heard of that acwilliams, didn't realise you meant a Renault dealership.

Can't hurt to ring around. I was going to go to Birchdown originally, one of the owners is a member on here but I can't remember his username SBV something I think, it's only 80ish miles from me and you get to pimp around in their Kangoo van lol. Only reason I've not is because my fan belt has started making a hell of a noise and TBH I have taken the car off the road until I've got it sorted. Can't afford to replace 16 bent valves should the aux belt snap and shred into the cam belt or get wrapped around a pulley.

I'll post back in this thread on Monday afternoon mate and let you know how it's gone on, but I don't think I'll have any problems with Mark doing it.

Errm so it's now Friday morning lol...

Anyway car sprung a water leak on the way back from picking it up so it went back into the garage on Tuesday morning for a new rad, but I've been away with work so only picked it up yesterday. After letting it warm up and doing a few miles to make sure everything was ok I took it for a good blast and I'm sure it's now pulling stronger than it did before, although that could be a placebo effect TBH, idles lower and better than it did previous though.

So I'd highly recommend Mark Lightfoot if you're still looking.
