Set up an A record to map the mail server's IP address to a host name.
i.e; mail.domain.com
Set the MX record to mail.domain.com. The lower the priority number, the more it takes precedence over other MX records.
Piece of pish.

hi sorry for the late response,

The domain wasnt set up correctly in the first place, turns out the mx records should have been edited in a completely different CP. Its a bit of strange set up (i think), we have two control panels, one for the domain and one for the hosting (both same company), the mx records should have been changed in the hosting control panel, not the one above which was the domain control panel.

but yes, to answer your question, its all sorted. thanks for your help!
