My 200 Gear Box on the way out?

  Golf 7.5R & Clio 200
Hi Guys..

I'm slightly annoyed I'm having to write this.. But I'd like some opinions please. I will get a video tonight when I'm home from work for you all to see.

My gear box has always felt lumpy, nothing like the fiesta ST I came from, and I got used to that. Recenetly it's been feeling even more lumpy, but it is not crunching and not hard to put into gear, just feels different.

Now, the second thing thats making me a bit :S Is that all this has only happened since Bedford Evening track day..

Also, my clutch. Whenever the car is cold, and only in first and second gear, it makes a weird sound. I suffered from a squeeky clutch before, but thats gone away now. This sound is like when you're cleaning a window, and rub a bit too long, if you get me?

If the car is off or not in gear, it doesnt do it. As soon as I go into 3rd or above it's fine also. Just 1st and Second and mainly when cold.

(FYI - Gear box replaced under warrenty, roughly a year and a bit ago, if it is the gearbox now, I'll scream at Renault).

Please tell me I'm a worrying little girl and there's nothing wrong.. :(

Thanks,
Ry

I think* it's only 12months on a replecement box, I'd get down to Renault ASAP though and see what they say. If you've noticed a change in the box then you're probably right in thinking something's wrong

I'm assuming that'll be a £90 charge or something just for looking - even better! Cheers mate

Also - Called my Mum who's at home, she can't find any paperwork about the gearbox being replaced (must admit I never looked for it, took Steve's word when I bought the car) I'm assuming Renault will have a record of it anyway?

Annnd another thing, I have a Rolling Road day tomorrow.. Avoid?

What Renault do you use?

A rolling road day is now more stress realistically than giving it beans on the road. It could make the problem worse which makes it easier taking it to renualt

I use Toomey Southend, I just called and they said first thing they want to do is road test it to see if they can 'feel' anything wrong. Can't get time off work today unfortunatley, will go down there tomorrow.

Kyle - I'll be late for the RR day, goign to Renault first thing. will pop down after even if I don't run

The gearbox and exhaust were changed at renault london west. The paperwork ( unusually was given to the owner ) which was passed onto you.

Ring renault london west and check the date of the gearbox completion, i think however its getting on a year maybe longer.
if they ask for it to be inspected take it to Renault London East as they are the same dealer.

toomey southend arent very good.
dont mention a track day as renault wont be interested after that as they will class it as misuse.

Listen to Steve. If not contact Renault direct and explain that a gearbox is built to last longer than 4 years. Products have to be fit for purpose and 4 years out a gearbox isn't fit for purpose imo.

See this is something that i've always been interested in, if reno don't want to honour repairs in warranty and now on a major mechanical part thats only 4 years old, why do they market the RenaultSport range as track-bred cars? My local dealer (Parks Renault East Kilbride) are right dick heads if you take them a car with a the dashboard lit up like an Xmas tree if you've been 'pressing on' or on track.

My old R27 which had to to go to them after a rather spirited club run, emissions, engine management light, traction control issue etc.. The car was only a year and a bit old but they were crying as the ECU had to be reset and it'd take them months to get the money back from reno blah blah.. Yeah the care police have been informed!

Especially as this was specifically a renault UK trackday as well.

The exhaust baffles went on my mates 18 month old R26:R after some track use. Renault tried to get out of it saying that the R26:R isn't meant to be used on a track.

Renault will use the 'misuse' card on anything they think they can get out off-

However Its a grey area- where do you draw the line.-

If you take your car on a track day & it falls to bits I would fully expect to Hold renault accountable- however after sustained use on track then I think it would be void-

Somewhere in the middle is the grey bit-

S

PS the 200 Gearbox has always been lumpy- especially from cold.

Renault made me get a rolling road print out when mine packed up to prove the car was standard power lol's

Can't comment further on my saga for a number of reasons, but if your interested speak to James Stone at S&MWM.

The replacement 'box would only have been covered under warranty until the car warranty ran out. You only get a 12 month warranty if you contributed to the cost of it unfortuantely.

Why though? Why 3 years warranty on a gearbox or engine? Have a look at the sale of goods act.

Customers’ rights last for six years
The law says that a customer can approach you with a
claim about an item they purchased from you
for up to
six years
from the date of sale (five years after discovery of the problem
in Scotland).
This does not mean that everything you sell has to last six
years from the date of purchase! It is the time limit for the
customer to make a claim about an item. During this period,
you are legally required to deal with a customer who claims
that their item does not conform to contract (is
faulty
) and
you must decide what would be the reasonable amount of
time to expect the goods to last. A customer cannot hold you
responsible for
fair wear and tear
.
The six year period is not the same as a guarantee, but it does
mean that even where the guarantee or warranty supplied
with the product has ended, your customer may still have
legal rights.

People just roll over and accept s**t! The fact is that gearbox if it has failed, has failed before it should have imo!

Small update, I took it it Toomey Renault in Basildon, a supposed Renault Sport Specialist. One of their 'Master Technicians' took it for a test drive with me in the passenger seat.

He said these cars weren't smooth from factory (durr) and said he would like to have mine overnight to drive it cold too. Asked if anythings wron in his opinion and he said 'Will e able to tell you more after having it for a night' which was helpful.

He did also say people use these as race cars and its only a Clio lol

Didnt charge me for the test drive, but are charging £64.00 to keep it over night and try in the morning (dropping it off Monday, picking up Tuesday). A lot of mory for an extra test drive but oh well!

Im going to do te RR day tomorrow, if the box is breaking, it's breaking either way.

The box was replaced at some point in 2011 and my warranty was up December 2012, but I have no issue making a scene in the dealership should it be diagnosed as broken!

Will update if/when I know anything, cheers for the opinions guys

Oh also, they kept asking if I bought it new from Renault, when I said no, they seemed a tad less interested. Must have asked a good 6 times.

They also asked about my Renault Loyalty, whether I use them for servicing etc, I jut said haven't needed a service but I would (I have had a service, took it to 519 lol)

Bet you a £ 1 they don't find anything wrong with it- & put the noises down to being
'within acceptable thresholds'
remember Renault London East / west can give you the exact date of when the gearbox was changed.

If it had full Renault service history they would contribute say 75%, no history with Renault i can almost 100% say they wont contribute, but you never know.

We had a 59 plate 200 in a few weeks ago, aux belt shredded and took out the cambelt. Renault paid 70% good will as she had full service history with us, also the fact she was due to collect her new 200T from us the following month, proper unlucky.

Hi Ian,

Must admit, I am tempted to take it elsewhere just for the diagnosis, then go back to Renault if it is broken. Seems a lot of money to do a 5 minute test drive in the morning.

Its not just being stiff, it's the noise it's making too. I think I'll have a chat with a mate that's a mechanic and go from there

I have had 2 or 3 services at Renault, and 1 at 519, but I suppose I don't have to tell them about the 519 one lol

Absofcukinglutely.

Might as well leave it at Tesco and ask the trolley boy to have a look. Probably more qualified.

Go find the 'things the dealer said' thread !!!! They'll probably tell you it's not even got a gearbox, it's a shoebox or that the engine needs changing and that'll be £42,000.

They will/should drain some oil to check for swarf etc within that labour costs/diag.

Sorry if this is thick, but what on earth is swarf? Sounds like a Dwarf Smurf

Tiny little bits of metal that gets shaved off the gears etc.

a small amount is normal, anything bigger than your small toe nail is bad

Christ!! I read these threads and i do worry about my 60 plate 200, it's just clicked 27,000 miles and so far in my ownership its only had a wiper stock/mpg button thingy under warranty, are boxes common to need replacing on them or is just luck? Thankfully mine has full reno history, reno warranty until Sept then extended warranty after that.

What sort of money do reno charge for major mechanicals like a rebuild due to belt failure or a new box, if you don't mind me asking?

Im sure the head rebuild came to just over 2k with the proper labour time and all parts. Boxes are pure luck really, we have done a few but not masses. Not sure on the price side of things.

Sounds about right.. I had a de-phaser pulley go on my 52' 172 two years ago, the history said the belts and water pump had all been done the year before but i'm not so sure, i spent nearly 900£ putting it right, needless to say i didn't hang onto it long after that, it never ran the same afterwards.
