when i change my pads and discs ive read in my haynes manual it is recommended that the caliper guide pin bolts are to be replaced (ie the ones that bolt the caliper on) is this necessary?

As above, just put some loctite on the threads, if your buying official Renault brake pads they come with new bolts but it will cost you.
 
  Vectra 1.9 CDTi SRi 150
Most of the time there is enough residue left on the threads that its not really necessary. But theres no harm in putting more thread lock on for peace of mind.
