Parents and computers

how are your parents about computing, are they good with them or are they struggling.

My dad thinks hes good with them and jokes he is tech support at work sometimes, in reality hes not that good but not bad for an old man i guess.

He has always had dialup and wouldn't go BB as he didn't want to pay for it or move from bt for the free ones, finally he has moved to talktalk though.

It got connected on tuesday and i set him up a wireless network and tonight he called me all panicked as he had lost internet access. He had right clicked on the wireless icon in the system tray and clicked disable as he couldn't get the internet to go of LOL.

I got him enabled again once I had calmed him down as he thought he had broken it and couldn't bare to think he would be without t'internet.

Then he asked me how he gets the internet off again and I try explaining to him that its the router that connected to the internet and the idea of BB is that its constantly on and you don't turn it off but he still struggles to understand, he wanted to know how he shuts the computer down while the internet is on, he wants to turn it off.

I had to laugh as he just couldn't understand its always on LOL

Are your parents this bad with computers or are they reborn techies!

my dad is a nightmare

my mum is worse - she thinks she can 'break' t'interweb.

and my job - IT support lol! But these 2 are too much

Both of my parents are rubbish, I explain things to them - they never listen though, as they know best:rolleyes:

lol, know how you feel, my dad worked as slow as dialup worked so i doubt hes any quicker now with 8mb BB, watching him type is like pulling teeth, i just can't watch him, it pains me!

I suppose at least they try, hes just got to get used to the fact that its now always there and on when he needs it, its much easier now, he'll get used to it.

They are not completely clueless, but they think I'm IT support when really I don't know a massive amount about them.

I normally have to fix their issues with the broadband etc.

my folks are still on dial up on my old Windows 98 machine! I say I can get them a new box but they say it's good enough for them lol. As you say, at least they try

my dads a systems manager.. so he knows too much

my mum... she dont have a clue what a keyboard even is lol

Aside from parents not having a clue - my younger bro (he's 21) knows sweet fa about things - he did I.T in college too

My mums pretty good tbh, I taught her anyway :D I like my mum to be good at stuff, plus she used to be a professional typist back in the day.

My dad showed me the ropes when I was younger by introducing me to a Sinclair ZX81 and showed me quite a few other computers along the years. He's clued up with theirs and refuses to allow me to play with their pc! lol

As for mum.. She only knows one website... Ebay :S pmsl

My mum is absolutely clueless. If she accidentally deleted a shortcut on her desktop she would immediately panic that she had just lost all her work and she would have to open every single file she had ever saved to make sure it was still there.

My dad is like wurzel gummidge, if he forgets to put his computing head on then he starts calling the internet & his browser Google and he cannot locate MS Paint from the menu. Lately I think he's lost his computing head behind some books or something.

Since replacing Norton with Avast, i don't get half as many calls from my dad, however he has managed to lose his image file associations lately and currently has to drag and drop them into FF to view them lol

My brothers don't really know s**t either. One of my brothers likes to think he does because he's doing short courses. The only problem is that they are things like learning to use Office 2003 (I did tell him he'd probably have to take another on the new office lol) He's also done his European Computer Driving Licence - from what I can see all that does is confirm you can turn your pc on, open IE and turn it off again. Mum is always mentioning that, she seems to think this makes him more techie than me, which always makes me laugh as I've been "fiddling" since I was 11 and have a GNVQ Advanced and a HND in IT.

  Better than yours. C*nt.
My dad thinks he's better than he is, and messes with Linux that much that eventually it just f***s the computer (well done old man), and has to ask me trivial windows questions "Because it all gets moved around so often" (How long has XP been out?)

My mum is a programmer, but doesn't do support...

My dads not too bad considering his age, but my mum is truely awful, I hate her going anywhere near the computer! She done a computer course years back too, before then she used to point the mouse at the screen like a remote control lol!

But she still is clueless, if I leave the computer on for a moment she will just come in and turn it off ny the button, not the proper way. No matter how many times we explain not to she still does it! She thinks it's ok if the screensaver has come on :S

my parents are crap using computers, even tho they both use them at work all day long, they type with one finger lol, i'm sure they've convinced themselves that they cant use them and so dont bother learning anything.

My Dad trys his best and with everyday tasks such as t'internet browsing and emailing he's okay. Anything else and he's straight on the phone to me.

Girlfriends Dad likes to think he knows what he's doing but really he hasn't a clue. He likes to change settings to know what they do but rather than try one at a time he does loads at once and doesn't write anything down. Needless to say I've reinstalled Xp a fair few times.

Girlfriends Mom can't even turn the computer on.

my girlfriends dad didn't think the pc was safe to turn on because there was no anti-virus

Mine are bloody useless and my little bro has to supervise them at all times while on the net.
