PC Gamers - monitor opinions

I'm after a bit of 3rd party opinion, as I'm still struggling to decide.

The scenario is this; I plan to upgrade my PC monitor to 1920x1200 but can't really choose between 24" or 27". Obviously the first reaction will be 27" but as both sized panels will be 1920x1200, the bigger version will have a bigger pixel pitch, and thus not as sharp, possibly requiring more AA. 30" is out of the question because 2560x1600 is just too much to ask for mega frame rates.

What would you do? I'm currently looking mostly at the Acer G24, but part of me says go 27" or regret it later.

What about going for that Dell Monitor that was posted on HUKD a while ago - very good price for a 24", 10,000:1 contrast ratio (excellent) - full 1080p HD compatible too. See if I can find the linky....

Iiyama would be top of my list, Roy. Have you checked their range out?

I've personally stayed clear of any widescreen options for now - still preferring the 4:3 aspect ratio. I use a widescreen 23" at work, which is brilliant from an IT viewpoint - paired with a 19" 4:3 monitor.

For gaming though, I still prefer the older (and arguably, better supported) 4:3 based resolutions.

Cheers. Not overly bothered about 'full' 1080p as anything 24" is going to be 1200p anyway. 1080p just means 16:9. It's only for games so native 1080 is moot :)

Reading about input lag on the Dell 2709WFP which puts me off as it's a shooter machine. The Acer is looking favourite TBH.

Ah, ok. :)

Not quite 27", but very close!

Cheers man I'll check it out. Not many reviews online though :(

I've read that if your into really in-depth photo editing then you should get something else, but otherwise all I could find were good reviews. Anything I should know?

Well without slagging off your purchase. I've read that it has relatively poor black and white levels, which are pretty important to me :)

Yes, most use TN panels which do not offer the full colour range and change as you move in front of the screen. I got a samsung 24 anyway as i do not need a calibrated monitor and the higher resolution was more important.

I would be tempted to go for the larger option TBH, I don't think that you would be really be able to notice that much of a difference and your spangly graphics card should be able to handle having all the trimmings turned on.

i have a dell 24" and it's amazing, i'd go for that over the 27 personally because it's gonna be for gaming and ultimately, for me anyway, my viewing distance is less because i'm right next to it...i.e. monitor > keyboard > me. Not to mention as you said, stretching the same resoltuion over a bigger monitor simply wn't look as good

Input lag is really making me want to stear clear of Dells this time around TBH. Since pretty much all the PC in question ever does is play shooters, input lag is not exactly a good side. Tricky sector. Maybe I should go for the £1600 NEC 30" multisync roffle :D

I'd have thought you'll be relatviely close to the monitor, as David says, so surely there is such a thing as too big a monitor for gaming? 27" will seem pretty big when you're only that distance away from it!

there is a new Samsung High-Res 23" SM2343BW 2048 x 1152 resolution, and 16:9 aspect ratio. The screen also offers a 5ms response time, 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 300 cd/m2 brightness and 170/160 viewing angles. The screen is TN Film based, and uses the latest high-res panel from Samsung themselves (LTM230TT01/02).

You can pre-order it from Overclockers UK for £199.74.

They are just brilliant screens - with s**teloads of inputs...

Yeah, saves desk space if people need to connect more than one console, as well as having two monitors and a TV. Unless they really need a TV you can get away with using just the Dell.

Dude, get the 27" I had a dell 30" @ 2560x1600 and it was absolutely immense for games!

You will regret not getting the 27" trust me. :)

Those who've tried the Dell 2709WFP...do you notice the input lag? Every review I'm reading mentions it. One guy even mentions that he never normally sees it, but did on this panel. Not encouraging at all :(

FFS I still can't quite justify this upgrade. It's all in the basket ready to go, but I'm small concerned that my 780i/DDR2 setup is going to bottleneck. CPU is a QX9650 which runs at 3.8GHz on air no problem. It will run at 4Ghz but gets too hot which I could fix with lapping and/or water.

This mid-term upgrade is the best part of £1k, and I'm unsure whether or not to skip it, and go straight for an i7 setup now. Obviously this will cost even more, but is much more likely not to choke the GTX295.

I need a new sofa too :(

thought the 4870x2 was better value for money?

i7's looking better and better nowadays, the 920 overclocks ridiculously apparently, reports of up to 4ghz on air!! mental numbers. Although for gaming i7's haven't quite got it together i read.

I have a dell 2407wfp6 never had any input lag problems!

Yeah it may be better VFM in some peoples eyes. Truth is, it isn't that much cheaper, and when you're fussy about vsync, a few extra frames can make the difference between 60 & 30. No?

Just go for the 27" and sit a bit further away from it lol.
Bragging that you've got a 27" monitor is so much cooler than bragging about a 24" one. :p

FFS you can't win. I've been looking at the Hazros, in particular the 26". Low ghosting, virtually no input lag, great colours, but poor blacks :(

Almost impossible to choose TBH. I'd rather just get a f**k-off CRT.

But what if you get pwnt on Call of Duty by someone using a better 24" ;)

I'm seriously anal about input delay tbh. The reason I haven't bought a HD screen for the XBox yet. And to those that say they don't notice a difference, you're obviously not that good at the game:p

I think the problem for me is that because I've recently got a new plasma TV, I've realised what proper smooth motion should look like. No LCD at any price will match my plasma in this regard, so it's a balancing act. I still think the Acer G24 is the best all rounder. Reasonable colours, low input lag and rapid response. I'm almost certainly going to go for this. Unfortunately I now also need a new shed & fence, as well as a new sofa. Oh well it's only money right?
