question about remaps...

  Dirty E91
thinking of having some manifold work done on my 182 by Ben at AWT, it's been mentioned that having it remapped after the work has been done would be of great benefit, anyone know if this is a chip swap or just a case of plugging in a laptop and tweaking the exisitng system?

Any idea of cost would also help!

A remap is just a changed set of injection and fueling maps. The more air an engine intakes due to a more efficient manifold the more fuel it needs to make more power or just to ensure the air fuel mixture doesn't run lean. Ever cars fueling needs are different the maps they leave the factory are a mid way mark realy they are designed to work on the good and the bad engine onew which are on th top and bottom limits. When you increase the air into the piston (or remove the restriction0 then these middle of the range maps suddenly become less perfect for MPG power etc. These replacment ECU contian different fueling etc maps but there only desinged for cars with exhaust etc and of course they arn't perfect for all cars modification and don't account for good and bad there a midrange maps just desinged for all good and bad engine with an exhaust etc. A proper remap can be done in a few ways.

One is a whole new ECU can be stuck in your car which is about £1k then another £500 having the maps made up on a rolling road. this isn't the cheapest option but if in later life you go for other work any remapper can usuaul work on aftermarket ECU's also they can run more complex items such as throttle bodies also they can run any rpm you want ie 8k redlines etc.

Another option is what GDI along with other companies sell these are boxes which fool the ECU and other sensors to put more fule in there limited to only being able to adjust fuel and injection they cannot fool with the rpm redline. Your looking at £500 to fit and map though.

The last option is the best but obviuosly for lack fo wires but can be difficult and expensive. This is to remap the stock ECU there a few places it seems that can now do this it can the the cheapest and they just plug in to your old ECU and overwrite the info. They can adust your RPM and fueling but it depends on the remapped ability and knowedge of the ECU usually.
