No, you'll be fine, I did this last week didn't lose anything except 2-3 hours of my time. Takes forever and a day to complete.

Back everything up and then just wipe it and restore from backups. Usually quicker than the upgrade which can take anything up to 24 hours to complete.

A fresh install takes about 45 minutes.

I've been using the RC for the last 6 months and have just bought a retail copy of Ultimate. I now have to install all of my applications again. What a drag... :(

Where are these crazy figures coming from. What are you installing it on to, a Sega Megadrive?

FLOL!

I agree tho that upgrade does generally take longer than a clean install, thats just what i've seen from the few that i've done.

Depending on how much data and how many programs are installed etc it can take an age to do the upgrade.

Not talking about on low end hardware either. MS engineers have said that it can take around 10 hours to do a backup on a Q6600 based system with around 650gb of data and 40 - 50 programs.

I have more than that running but use higher end hardware. Still didn't fancy the upgrade option.

As I said 24 hours on some machines is quite possible.

I've done about 30 windows 7 upgrade's and none took long at all really. It really doesn't matter how much stuff you have on the HDD.

did mine a couple of nights ago and it took about 3 hours all in

touchpad scrolling didn't work after i did it but you just need to reinstall the driver and it sorts it out (just incase anyone else comes across that problem aswell)

im gona upgrade today.

cant be doing with a complete install as im to lazy to reinstall everything again.

You don't have to reinstall everything, as there is nothing to install.

Games can just be copied to another partition (Like steam etc). All drivers are found and installed by windows automatically. Its really too easy this Windows 7 stuff.

On a 486........

Funnily enough no. Instead of trying to be clever. Why don't you go and look it up see what the MS engineers have to say about upgrade times.

Infact I will provide the link for you to make it even easier.

That is an article one of the MS engineers wrote about upgrade times in relation to Windows Vista times. I did say in "some" cases it can take up to 20+ hours. For me I come under the super user section. So was much faster to simply back up and restore myself.

As you can see from that table it isn't exactly bottom of the range hardware. When a Q6600 based system can take 1220 minutes...Which is over 20 hours.

im sure if you know exaclty what your doing its easy.

but im not an expert when it comes to reinstalling windows, so am gona go with the upgrade route.
