Quick DSLR question...

Why I'm trying to focus my camera, with a kit lens on, only one of the focus points seems to do anything? Top left hand corner is always the one that lights up red?

I've tried changing the metering mode but no joy? Is it broken? lol!

I'm just about to try my other lens.
