Quite Slow in 5th Gear

hi guys, I know this is a strange one but ive recently purchased a ph-quick 172 and it seems to pull very well in every gear apart from 5th

It seems fine in every other gear but when flat out in 5th it seems to go like a 1.4 :(

Im just comparing it to when me and a friend had a play on when I had my vts and he had a ph2 172 and his seemed to pull away from me top end

Im not sure when the car was last serviced but surely that would effect every other gear not just 5th?

just seems strange as my vts would just rip straight past it at that sort of speed :(

I blame the twin cats in it :)

Going to give it a good service and get a full AAS de-cat back system (£500) eeek!

No, it wouldn't. The VTS just feels quicker at that speed, as it's more 'plasticy'.

afaik a MK1 172 has a longer 5th gear ratio than a MK2 172 and VTS's have quite short ratio boxes? depends if the saxo was standard, keeping in mind a saxo with only a few breathing mods is going to be probably over 140bhp? some standard 172s run as long as 145-155bhp! so its going to be close but you should still be faster unless theirs a problem!

Mine pulled cleanly upto 120mph on the autobahn but then the engine starts to lose its war with the cars lack of aerodynamics though I found it would still pull to its top speed just quite a bit slower.

well we are talking going from flat out in 4th to 5th so approx 120 mph

The saxo did have 4-2-1 exhaust and filter, but that shouldnt make that much of a difference against a standard 172?

The 172 is very strange, it flys through the gears, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, then gets into 5th and just doesnt want to barely reach 130, I just had visions of tickling the 140 mark with it but the way it is at the mo it wouldnt stand a chance going for 10 miles

I did think about the aero dynamics but why would it not effect the rest of the gears?

i seriously think my 1.6 megane would beat it from 120-130

Sounds like something is wrong. Mine will do 140, not lightening quick getting there but it does.

hmm strange, what does yours have done to it?

It probably needs a good service if Im honest as Ive only just bought the car

need to check the history to find out when it was last done

Not too much, but my autobahn run was before any engine mods so it will get there in stock form. Just give it a good service and go from there.

a good service isnt going to make much if any difference 2 performance though, apart from if the airfilters realy clogged. maby if it was miss firing due to the plugs or something then yes.

so it wont make much of a differnce apart from two of the main things that should be checked in a service!?

Like I say the guy that had it got it serviced at the intervals,

Think I will save up for an ITG filter Element for it and do a full service on it

Does anybody know the best oil to use? I always use magnetic but im sure the clio is a different grade to the usual 5/40

Also is the fuel filter in the fuel pump on the ph1's or is it seperate?

Thanks for all your suggestions so far

  PH1 172 Sport
The fuel filter is sometimes on the outside of the tank on the PH1's though the service interval on them is approaching 150,000 miles IIRC so its not worth bothering with. Magnetec makes the engines a bit noisy so most steer clear of it.

Try opieoils to get a service pack from as we get 10% discount for being club members.

hes not having any running problems just slow performance in 1 gear so plugs are going to make f**k all difference imo.

air filters worth looking at but again its not going to suddenly make it "fast" in 5th gear.

brakes binding maby?

its ok the clio seems to have woken up yesterday and was just 1mph short of tickling the 140 mark so it may have just needed a good pasting :)

I did notice the considerable drop of revs between 4th to 5th, it just say goes above 5krpm when you change into 5th so Im guessing the longer ratio has had a big part to play
