Red dots on Exaltos - Here’s your answer

Seen this asked a few times so I thought Id explain.

Red dots are nothing to do with Cup pack or not.

The red dots mark the "high point" on the tyre - this is so they can be matched with the low point on the wheel to minimise radial runout. Alloys dont tend to have low points as much as steel wheels, so youll probably find the dot is opposite the tyre valve.

Radial runout is when the wheel is not perfectly round and vibrations are produced as the wheel spindle moves up and down.

Yellow dots are "light balance" points, usually the tyre is rotated so that the yellow dot is opposite the valve, but in the presence of both red and yellow dots, red takes precedence.

If your tyre doesnt have any dots it means its come out of the factory as a better yield - ie. better balanced and more round.

The colored lines are used during the assembly of the tyre. they help line up the individual parts of the tyre before it is formed as a complete unit. Sometimes these are more visible on the finished tyre than other times.

The only PE2s you can buy aftermarket are the same as the OEM Cup ones. If there were true variations then the codes on the tyre would differ.

There were two versions of the tyre explained in the faq of exterior power and mechanical forum.

The green dot ones were fitted to some non cup suspension 182s.

Im pretty sure there was extensive discussion in march 2004 about this.

Yes but the explaination doesnt stack up..!

Remember tyres are safety critical parts so there are answers but no good ones yet.

The tyre code on the original non cup pack and the cup pack were the same but just had green dots / lines instead of red one. Some tyress now have blue line green line red lines. Why have different colours ? Why do some tyres have no lines.

I think a factory visit and a complementry set of tyres should do it...!
