Roasted Focus ST170

Thought it may be a bit of a challenge (168PHP) . Easy picking, rolling start (35mph) in 2nd gave him about 8 car lenghts. when he booted it I followed, by the time i was changing to 3rd I was 2 car lenghts behind, then had to start backing off. Slowed down to 60 ish in third for traffic to move out the way. Booted again, they dont have anywhere near as much above that, had to keep backing off.

  BMW X5, Exige 260.

the general consensus is that they have feeble engines.

I do like the way they look though.

Cups are bloody fast, theres no two ways about it.

hehe, i had one of these try it on at the weekend too, gave him good kicking several times but he kept coming back for more,LOL i slowed down to pull into maccys and he almost ran up my arse then swerved into the outside lane and almost ran up the arse of the car in that lane too, he had two girls in the car with him so me and my mate who was in the car reckon he was embaressed that he got tw*tted by a clio in front of the girlies :D

I have also raced an st170 and pulled away easily.. they are well crap in my opinion..

They certainly arent crap. They look well nice and i bet if you take off some of Fords safety restristors they would be pretty fast...

And the handling IMO if far superior than the clio, with the McP independant suspension keeping all 4 wheels gripping the road much more. Just a bit more power and i think the ST could suprise a fair few people.

well i fooked him on the straights and on the twisties so they cant be all that and he was definately trying hard, not saying they are mega slow but he was way off the pace of my car

a "bit" more power ? they would have to be about 190-200bhp before they even kept up IMHO

i think this says it all about fords performance model

IT HAS A FREE INSURANCE DEAL!!!!!!

but they dont tell you that on all the adverts

true, i pulled out a massive gap, when we started racing i came from behind him and pulled past with ease, i think the focus has weight against it so i expect another 20bhp might even it out a bit

and there was also a recall on the brake lines, basically after a bit of a thrashing if you gave a little tug on the brake lines they just disintegrated

another quality ford

Yeah, Ive given a ST170 a good roasting a while back. Rolling start at traffic lights to go onto a dual carriage way. Booted in 2nd, and pulled several car lengths by 80mph. Slowed down for a round about and did well to keep up until I booted it on exit.

Yesterday, had a tussle with a new megane. Did pretty well considering. Anoyingly too close my chuff, booted in 3rd and left him quite convincingly. Pulled in to let him overtake and was on his tail and had to back off alot. Come to a round about and overtook him on the outside.. Serves him right for driving aggressively.

Also gave me an opportunity to test the new eibachs and the Yoko A539 tyres. The rear end is totally unstickable which leads to slightly more understeering setup. There hardly any roll though corners. I think I prefer the Contis more. The Yokos compound is really soft which gives the steering a slightly "squidgy" feel.

The RS focus is th ereal deal and Ford probaably made the ST170 a good deal slower soa s not to make the marketing iof fthe 2 model;s confused.

As much as the RS is a powerfull car I dont know if I could part with that much money for something with such bad reviews.. all this "unless its perfect tarmac it jumps all over the road" stuff .. i guess a test drive would have to be in order.. but I vowed to myself never to own another ford again..

Having test driven both the ST170 and Clio 172 before I decided on the 172, I have to disagree. My local dual carriageway has a 270+ degree entry sliproad where my current Corrado VR6 starts slipping at 50mph+. The Clio stuck like glue to over 60mph but the ST170 started slipping at 55mph. The chassis is excellent and I could feel exactly what was happening and use the steering to go faster (which was fun) but it was definitely wobbling. Not so in the Clio (nor Corolla T-Sport but i think its ESP was switched on so maybe that helped). To add some perspective here Ive taken it at 80+ in a VX220 in semi damp conditions *gulp*

I like the ST170 styling and its definitely a more practical size but the extra cost and lack of climate control, ESP, Xenons as standard gave the 172 the edge.

I pick the 172 up a week thursday :devilish:

The ST170 is a bigger car and not a direct competitor of any clio. Its also no more than a Warm Hatch.
