Sad I know...

Tighten My Nuts

...but I was sat in bed last night drooling over the Cup brochure (six weeks and counting before delivery!) and re-reading (for the 100th time) the Evo review where they pitted the Cup against the RS, when I saw in the specs that the Cup has "smart wipers". I know theyre not automatic as on the 172...but what makes them "smart"?

It means they vary what they do according to your speed. So if they are on normal i.e. wipe wipe wipe, and then you pull up at a junction, theyll switch to intermittent. Then when you pull off again theyll speed up.

Its not like the 172 which actually senses the raindrops, but it does work perfectly well on the road.

Oh and the other smart bit. If you have the front wipers on and you select reverse gear, the rear wiper will courteously clear the rear screen for you.

(and you though you were sad eh?)

Could I change my existing setup for this. I cant stand the rain-sensitive ones. No matter how many people reply to this saying they work really well, they dont.

Theyre sh*te. Id much rather just set the dial on the stalk to set a different intermittent speed.

No it isnt. All it says is that if you leave it set to auto and turn off the engine, it will be disabled when you next start your engine.

Although this implies that the auto function will be disabled, in truth it disables any wiperage action at all. Youd think it would mean it goes intermittent but it just doesnt do anything. Resulting in you driving down the road with a windscreen full of water.

I thought you could disable the whole thing - cant remember how though. Same sort of thing as disabling the auto headlights. Damn wheres that handbook when you need it??!

Yes you can disable them, it tells you how to do it in the handbook, I too dont have a handbook handy, but when you disable them the little lever adjust the intermittent time instead of the sensitivity of the rain sensor.

ps. I have never had a problem with the auto wipers, the have always been perfect for me, maybe you got a duffer..

No no no no. I read the handbook, got my BSc in Renault Wiper Technology, then realised theyd never taught me in the module on turning off the wanky auto function.

I shall quote the full handbook tonight. I do seem to remember it saying something about having the ignition on (but not the engine running) and then pushing the stalk. All this does is bring up the oil meter.
