Service warning light!!!

  1.6 Astra Sporthatch
This morning I got into my Mk3 Clio Extreme to be met with the orange spanner service light solidly lit as I was driving to sixth form.

The car was serviced in July before I bought it, its had all new filters, oil change, new cambelt fitted, and the car has only done a couple of thousand miles since.

No idea what this means really or what it could be? Only thing I can think of that hasn't been changed is the spark plugs? Anything else it could be?

Im a bit new to cars! Sorry!

Thanks :)

Okay new issue, service is found to be a forgery receipt from unipart so the service never actually happened! New info needed if anyone can help? :)

When does a cambelt and other belts need changing and a rough idea on costs?

The service light is on and the last service was at 29,149 miles on the 6th of January 2012, today is it on 34,000 miles. What needs doing? Is it in dire need of a service and if so what should be changed? The last service changed the cabin filter, whipers, and bulbs, and then two years before that it had a full service including oil and filters at 22703 miles.

I'm totally new to this, is the car safe to drive with the service light on? Obviously I understand the car needs servicing some time soon but how soon?

Thanks again guys!

The car doesn't magically know that it's been serviced. The light needs reset every time it's serviced and this has likely not been done.

Just put it in for a service then? Or better still, do it yourself?

Oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and a set of spark plugs will cost you £50-75 on a 1.2 I would imagine.

Depending on the year of your car, I doubt the cambelt will be needing done at that mileage however it may be due on age.

Its a 55 plate, January 2006 with 34,000 miles. Looking at getting it serviced but how important is this? Money is very tight until after christmas!

How do you no it was a forgery

UniPart have verified the receipt is a total fake, they took a few looks at it and wrote the codes into their system and said its not real, then the registration plate they require when they supply parts was not on their system at all, showing they have never supplied the parts for the car used in the service. DRL Automotive supposedly carried out the service, but I cannot find a trace of them on Google, Companys House, and the phone number and address on the receipt doesn't exist or links to someone else (The phone number belongs to a young woman with no idea who DRL are!)

Any way to tell if the belts or filters have been changed? I am assuming nothings been done based on all the fake paperwork! Annoying how they even stamped the service book!!!

Called the police fraud unit as every car on their forecourt has this same new service supplied by DRL automotive using UniPart parts, and UniPart have never heard of either company apart from twice where they got reports of fake invoices claiming to be UniPart. There is a police meeting with me tomorrow evening to get more information.

Police meeting today, got alot of quotes for services and belts being changed, turns out the dealer who sold me the car has over 140 cars on their forecourt, all "recently serviced" that the police are going to look into. Meanwhile, the garage that sold me the car want to take it back and mend it all for me for free and give it a nice new service, debating this because it seems like going back into a burning building! Like getting cowboy builders back for more work!

On a side note, what does the service light get set off by? I feel like I can hear a hissing under the bonnet, and I figured this could be a spark plug coming out? I was driving the car fast just before the hissing now started.

Thanks again

Service light can get set off by many things such as the wiring under the seat which usually comes on with the airbag light or simply because it needs a service done.

The hissing you said about, how fast were you driving and was your car overheating at all when the hissing began? Did you lift the bonnet once you stopped to source the hissing noise further?

Was off road but on tarmac, around 50 but fast acceleration and braking late, changing gear alot later. Slight hissing sounds like its coming from the main area of the engine, with no tools I can't really check any further! Mates dad who is an ex mechanic is checking it over on Sunday, any ideas what it could be? Skint at the moment or itd be straight into a mechanic! Car still drives fine, feels no different at all. Having alot of issues with the dealer who sold me the car! Belts all need changing and the car needs a service, but simply can't afford it until after Christmas... :(

Thanks

I believe you're thinking of a different light. This one is on the MK3 and above that tells you the car is due a service, MK2s don't have this.

I was told on the MK3 the trip computer says "SERVICE DUE" when a service is soon, and the spanner only lights up when something is physically wrong requiring a service immediatly?

Normally there's a count down of mileage due for a service. Not sure if the spanner light comes on when the service is overdue or not - I have limited experience with this on the MK3's since the only MK3 I've driven/worked on was my other halves and it's always serviced bang on time at someone reputable.
