If I was to get a service at a local garage and not a dealership would I be better off buying my own service kit for them to use if it saves me some dollar?

Depends on what you mean by "service". An oil change only needs new oil, filter and sump plug. Most scheduled services are just an oil change and inspection of brakes, suspension etc.

Depends how old car is, what it is, and if it's still under warranty?

It's a 2009 Renault Clio sport 2.0, I've had it 4 years now, so it's not under warranty ha. I've not got a lot of money so I'd like to save money where I can that was all. Couldn't care less if garages hate it if we buy are own parts etc if it saves money haha

Well needs more than an oil change I'm guessing anyway, pretty sure I've not had it serviced since I've had the car tbh ?

If we're just talking about an oil change, I doubt you'd save much (if anything on the oil, filter and sump plug washer). So just take it to an independent and get them to supply the parts.

Or buy the oil etc and carry out the oil change yourself as you'd save a few more pennies that way. Downside to this is you wouldn't get a stamp in your service book and it may put off a potential buyer.

Show the garage your service book and they'll advise what needs to be included on the service. Chances are you'll need at least a brake fluid change, gearbox oil changes and new spark plugs.

Depends where you are, but take it to a decent Renault specialist. They work on them day in, day out & won't try to con you like Halfrauds or s**t fit.

oil change will be the least of your worries if that's not had its belts done, turn that £50 oil change into a £650 service lol.

My mate owns a garage and while he will happily fit the customers supplied parts the parts come with no warranty from him of course. Maybe not so much of an issue on a simple oil and filter change but for example they had a new timing belt kit fitted to a customers car a few years ago, garage supplied the part and within 12 months the tensioner failed and lunched the engine, their parts supplier took on the case and it was all rectified at the tensioner manufactures cost with no cost to the customer. Had that customer bought the parts from euro car parts or the likes and given it to the garage to fit to save a few quid that could have been a lot different!

Go in with that attitude, it should get you a free service at least!!!

Plus why would a garage want to make a profit? Not like they've got insurance, rates, bills, tools, disposal of your old oil etc to pay for.

Yes you would be better off. I've always bought my own service parts and paid the garage for labour, but then again I only buy OEM parts (oil filter and spark plugs) and buy the best oil (engine and gearbox) so it's more to do with making sure quality parts are used and not some cheap ECP crap.

If you really want to save money why don't you service it yourself, it would only take 30mins or so and only needs very basic tools.

Not serviced the car in 4 years. So it'll need a cambelt change along with a fluids service. £350's worth of parts £650 fitted.

Easiest way to save money is ignore the service all together.
