Setting For Sunny Days??

Hello guys,
been fiddling with my friends D40.. What sort of setting is most ideal for bright sunny days?? I always end have a blimming bright and white sky ruining my whole pictures?? Advice would be very much appreciated!

I would assume a fast shutter speed, low iso etc.

yea but the background of the sky usually turns out to be really bright.. is there anyway i can fix that?? thanks for ue help guys..

what metering mode are you using? could be down to that?

try mulit-zone, or whatever its called on your camera... or try spot metering on the sky.....

i usually use the matrix one.. Dont know if it could be down to that??
