Sky to Freesat

  Clio 182 cup'd
I just called up Sky to cancel as Im currently paying out £35 a month for something I dont really watch.

Spoke to cancellations who offered me a free Sky+ box and installation. I thoguht about it but after concideration I decided that Im not actually going to be saving anything, and there isnt many things I would actually record if I could.

I called back and told them this and cancelled it. I half expected them to offer me the subscription at a reduced rate, but they didnt, nevermind eh!

Anyway, Im thinking of moving to Freesat, has anyone else got this yet? Seems quite good really for the price

BBC HD was the only high-definition channel available on Freesat from launch day,[9] with ITV HD added as a 'red-button interactive' service from 7 June 2008. As of June 2008, ITV HD is only available via Freesat[10]
As of May 2008, no high definition channels are available via digital terrestrial, however, Ofcom have confirmed that from 2009 high definition TV will be available on Freeview, requiring an HD Freeview box.[11]"

From Wikipedia!! Think Im going to get it when the boxes become a little cheaper!

I've cancelled my Sky subscription and jumped over to FREESAT. I bought a HUMAX FOXSAT for £149 from Argos. BBC HD is immense, 1080i and DD 5.1. All the SD stations are received/upscaled to 576i, which is massively better than I've had from Sky.

ITV HD isn't as good as the Beebs, they seem to struggle and don't offer 5.1.

Freesat is very new, and you still don't have CH 5 onboard. To be honest I don't miss it. Gadget show/5th gear were all I watched, and they're both fairly poor IMO.

It's horses for courses really. I wanted HD, and while Sky's HD output is more extensive than Freesat's and Virgin's I couldn't justify emptying my wallet each month.

If you're a big sports fan, then you will lose out, as Freesat doesn't have any PPV stations, hence the name. I'm not really, however EURO 2008 in HD for free has been immensely impressive. The colour, detail and sound (from the Beeb) is great. And Amir Khan's fight last night in HD from ITV was pretty slick too (even with the technical problems). And Wimbledon in HD for the next 2 weeks will be fun.

Sky gave me 4 months of basic sky tv and internet for free. to evaluate freesat. So I sold my sky box for £30 on eBay and bought the humax hd box.

Plugged the new box into my old dish and bob's your uncle! Even comes with a free HDMI.

Still use the sky internet and will cancel my subscription fully before my 4 month 'evaluation' ends.

Freesat built-in to TV's is impressive.

I'm not a big TV watcher anyway, but you CAN get a Freesat box which has a hard drive like Sky+
