snapped timing belt

hi all new to the site and was wanting advice on my 172 phase 2 as the belts give up on it , was just wondering whats best move replacing engine or taking the head off and repair the valves if bent , i didnt heard anything bang when it went just lost power but heard that its a major chew just to get the head off it thanks si

Welcome.

I would buy a second hand engine (around £3-400) and fit a new belt to that before fitting back in to you car, probably the cheapest option.

thanks matey yeah my mechanic said thatl prob be best option cos auto data is saying 10+ hours to get the head off ! pricey weekend needing new engine timing belt kit , new dephaser and aux belt kit :(

Spend a few quid and become a forum member, you can then make use of the for sale part if the forum where cars are always being stripped, also you will be able to use the traders section, some big discounts to be had.

thanks j im gona do that also iv decided to take whole engine out and repair valves and renew the front end bushes and what not but while its out geting the head done do you lads know of any good gains in output i could do while the blocks out ? cams , head work ? did fancy the turbo conversion but with the belt going the work is gona cost a bit what with new belts and dephaser n what not

Cams produce good gains, will require someone to map the car after though.

Head work I'm not sure on, always been under the impression that the heads are finished pretty well.

If you want to get good advice Chip-mk1 is very knowledgable with these engines.

If you are doing the belts anyway then cams are a good way to get gains, but like -J- said it will require mapping properly afterwards.

There are lots of other things you can do as well, like higher comp pistons and better valves etc, but the gains are small unless its all done as part of a bigger picture, and ultimately you need to be on throttle bodies or turbo or supercharge it if you really want to make a big difference.
